Im in a bind on what should be a simple thing to do...
Fitting the rear wheel on my ZX6-R J1 the axle goes through a loop at the bottom of the caliper bracket and theres a block inside the swingarm that holds tha caliper in position i assume.
When i tighten the wheel the disk is grinding against the caliper...thats not natural but i've got no clue why its doing it or if im not doing it right...
help me please im supposed to be riding back to work tonight!!!

dont know..
sounds like the spacer is in the wrong place & I thnk so to, but even the manual isnt helpfull in the order they go back in.
The caliper bracket isnt sitting flush with the block inside the swingarm...
Take the axle out and put the spacer on the other side, see if that makes any difference..................
off now to watch the football................... be back in 50 mins :laugh1

This is getting stupid...its meant to be a two minute job...
Basically i have...
Axle nut---->Washer----->adjusting plate with the notch in the middle----->swingarm--->long spacer to wheel--->wheel---> small spacer that fits in wheel--->caliper mounting bracket---->adjusting plate and then the end of the axle...
does this sound right?

You sure that's the order it came out? Long spacer on the left?
If it's grinding, it could also just be that the rear pad isn't retracting fully into the caliper.

I cant remember the order they came out, lesson to be learned i think...its not sitting flush so its grinding on part of the caliper not the pads...

Check the caliper holder on the swingarm hasn't got a notch. You may have to slide the caliper along it rather than just pushing it on sideways. Look for marks inside the wheel which may show which side the spacer went (shiny bits that match the size of the end of the spacer). I'm supripsed you have two spacers on the same side, but then I'm out of touch with modern bikes, are you sure one doesn't sit on the other side of the wheel?
Lastly, when you get it back together properly, either make a note of the correct side for the spacer, or scratch a letter R or L on it based on sitting on the bike facing forward.

The only thing i can think from looking at it, is that if there is a spacer between the caliper mounting bracket and the swingarm that ive lost?

You should have a spacer either side of the wheel, they should push into the wheel, the calliper should run free along the swinging arm, the 2 spacers might be a different size to each other, if so you might need to find out which side they belong...........!
I would have though that the axle goes through the right side of the swinging arm, then through the calliper, then the spacer, then the wheel, then the spacer, the out the other side of the swinging arm
I Think...................

I've got the G1, and the larger diameter spacer goes on the sprocket side of the wheel.
So left to right from the rear of the bike....

so when the wheel tightens it pulls the caliper bracket away from mounting block

I'm not sure what I'm looking at here, but if it's the swing arm slider for the caliper then it's not on it properly.

Exactly, i think thats the problem when the wheel tightens it pulls away, but there isnt a notch or anything that holds it there...

I think your idea about looking at another ZX6 is the best thing.

Should be (from memory) a groove that the caliper mount sits in.
Also it wouldn't hurt to clean up the caliper glides. It's possibly it's 'sticking' on there, but less likely.

You haven't managed to fit the caliper behind one of the pads instead of between them have you?

Thats what i just thought.....Surely the disc isn't between the pad...

You havent put the disc in between the pads and the spacers go either side of the wheel inside the brake mount

I can only see one pad in this picture, the copper coloured bit is the pad isn't it? Surely there should be two of those? and the black bit is the caliper mount?
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v285/essexbikers/24022008181.jpg
In that picture.............you can see the outside pad the other pad should be inside the cailiper, but is the pad there? or has it not come out far enough? and the disc is rubbing against the cailiper body?
UKSkidMark
26-02-2008, 02:38 PM
On the rear pads on the ZX-6R the outer pad rides on the runner as you can see from the pic, but the inner pad is just held internally by springs at the bottom and the pin (92143) :)

The second pad is missing !!!!.....def only one pad there....that can be seen anyway ! And if they are both there you have to have the spacers wrong way round..........the diagram shows it well.....just compare that to what you have.

the spindal goes through sits in a recess in the swingarm
Inside the swingarm goes brake mount then spacer then wheel
Other side it goes spacer then it'll be the swing arm then a washer then the nut then the pin
Sit on a stall behind the bike position wheel with your feet hold it in place with spacers in place
you then have to put the spindal in slightly to the swingarm position the brake mount which should stay in place on its own just dont move the wheel to much
You get a rubber mallet
With ther left hand and your feet move the wheel slightly to line everthing up and use the mallet to knock it through
You wont be able to push it from where you are
Its a bit fiddly but keep calm it does work
Make sure pads are sitting either side of the disc
The brake pads are only held in by a pin get some new ones
Oh and
CLEAN THAT BLOODY BACK END UP WHILE ITS OFF!!!!!!!!!!!

Some of us sit on the floor with back ache trying to use our toes to lift the wheel high enough off the ground to get the spindle in!! :reading
Hehe - I'll get me coat.
If you want, I can pop down to Tilbury with my bike for comparison.

You're all putting too much effort into refitting rear wheels. Never mind trying to hold it in position with your feet and struggling to fit the axle at the same time.
Just roll the wheel up onto a brick till it's the right height and position in relation to the brake holder and the swingarm, then wedge another brick behind it to hold it. Then you can carefully push the axle through with one hand whilst holding your cup of tea with the other.

Well Stu has just been to mine...
It was put back together correctly...but the Caliper bracket or caliper might be bent?
Can they bend because of a flat tyre?
