bought one of those chain removal and replacement tools this week, along with my new chain and sprocket kit.
item 1 -be careful to remove any rivet head before using tool to push pin out, otherwise you may damage pin.
reponse, take 9" angle grinder out of box, no grinding wheel, but 9" diamond blade in it. couldn,t be bothered changing it, so ground head off rivets with it!
then thought oh bolox, lets try it, so cut through complete chain and rear sprocket with it!
chain came off in about a minute!
lots of sparks but quick!
you don`t need these fancy new fangled tools!

Just don't keep grinding, and grinding, and whoops, was that the swing arm.

Hacksaw, grinder, club hammer & chisel, even oxy-acetylene, plasma-cutter any of these + more will work for chain removal, getting the old chain off is the easy part! Getting the new chain fitted without over doing the riveting of the new soft-link is a different matter……
2-hammers anyone?

Phil, you should be able to get a split-link over the counter from any good bike shop, the one I most frequently use is in Leigh on Sea (not sure if I'm allowed to mention the name) or their is a chap in Chelmsford that is v.good & helpfull. I've ordered an oddball chain/sprocket combo for my quadbike from him in the morning and it arrived at my home address the very next day.
I always keep a spare split-link on my person when out mud-plugging, as you never know when it might come in handy, either for myself or other people i'm out with, and they are only pence (read: a couple of quid max) to buy.

yea i have a `part worn` one in my bum bag, as they are easier to fit, but i do need to get another one. tried to order one from M&P with some other stuff but the guy didn,t seem to fussed about sorting it so i left it.
good deal on C&S though.
will get it done, but not using the XR so much at the mo.
