What do you reckon??

The mirrors had to be taken off to fit the handlebar muffs, but i reckon i can put a small hole in there for the mirror stalks??

The tankbag.. it has straps and although it seems secure with the magnets, are they suppose to strap anywhere or is this if you use it as a tailpack or something?? Sorry ive never used one before..

Also, been reading that oxford gear isn't waterproof?? is this right? its a Oxford Lifetime tankbag?:grin2

Cheers all..:grin3

oh and anyone who cares.. the screen is a Puig 'Mini-touring screen' from here: http://www.getgeared.co.uk/acatalog/PUIG_Universal_Mini_Sports_Touring_Motorcycle_Scre en.html#a10006508

yes i know there just for show... :grin2

but even when its lovely and sunny here, riding through the alps at higher altitudes probably wont be the warmest of places..:reading

they are worth having as thermal gloves dont work anyway as the leather gets cold.... so muffs & heated grips= toasty fingers. ;)

obviously i can remove them or put them on if and when i need them (and turn the heated grips off).:grin1

edit: oh and the threads here to show the screen.. you do exactly the same with any extras you add to your bike..

I do agree with Jon on that 2E, mirrors would be strongly advised, especially if your on different roads, your going to need to keep your eyes peeled more than often....

Far as ive got is dover (twice in the same day, aiming for luxemburg), the gt refused to leave the country.:shooter

The muffs came with the tankbag, i got the tankbag, muffs, balaclava, and map holder from a guy off ebay.

I thought id shove them on and see how it all looked, couldn't fit them properly with the mirrors so removed mirrors and photographed the screen to show anyone who wants/is looking for one how it looks.. its a universal screen, i was quite chuffed with it..:laughboun:grin2

The mirrors will be going back on dont you worry!!

Im sure he will put the mirrors on when he comes to ride it...

Remember before you go anywhere it needs a full service... i AM NOT coming to pick you up!

It had a full service 66 miles ago?? it was laid up for a little while though.:reading

Current 'to do' List:

Chain needs adjusting (Swifties recommendation)
Carbs need balancing (misfiring sometimes and rattling)
Service (if it deems neccessary)
Tax
Insurance

If your going to stick 700 miles on it, then change the oil, check your chain will last that long, and check your tread.

Or just jump and go like i did to luxembourg :)

What nez says is right, get some wonder web and put it between tank and bag, savess al the scratches. Bar end mirrors should be able to go on your front mirrors giving you your rear vision back.

That is so much more easy on the eye than the green thing.

Make sure you have all you need to repair punctures on the road side yourself, and practice doing it before you leave.

oh and that tank bag will leak a little in heavy ****, nothing a black bin back and bungee can't fix though. Also, little tip from someone who has ridden well over 100k now, put all your gear in black bin bags, even inside so called waterproof bags.

we use the big Sains***ys bag for life shopping bags in all the panniers, work a treat to keep the leaks off and you can carry them into hotels et without the big panniers
Only snag is you look a prat carrying 4 big orange shopping bags
but hey, a dry prat.

been reading up on this, i would do that anyway incase the panniers should come undone or what not..;)

anyone used a scottoiler and know what you really need?? rather than add ons and such?

I would make sure that 20+ year old motor is well sorted if your going to ride that to europe, as with the other stuff, you can pack it and add it on when needed surely?

anyone used a scottoiler and know what you really need?? rather than add ons and such?Just get the Scottoiler Mk7 Universal Kit, that's all you need. The other extras are mostly rubbish (Been using Scottoilers since about 86).

Everyone I know who has the touring reservoir has grief getting it to work and the dual injector I fitted broke after a few weeks and never really dual injected for most of that time anyway. The original kit is pretty good though, I've had 30k miles regularly from many chains over the years (decent chains, not crap cheapo ones).

If you need petrol, get it in France. Its still cheaper (about 97p) but not on the motorways (pricey).
Cheapest in Calais is the Total garage, Ave Roger Salengro.
Throw a towel over your seat on the ferry before they put a strap on your bike. Stops the paintwork getting scuffed.
On sundays practically everything shuts except in bigger towns. Fill up on saturday!

in france the toll roads can be quite expensive (and boring), some of the N routes are nearly as fast, but much more fun.
we kept a steady 80-90 on these, just be sure to knock it right down through the villages.
the drivers are much more bike aware, and the bends keep you alert, plus you find nicer hotels and cafes.

thanks for all the advice.. pmed mick about a scottoiler he is supposed to have so that should be sorted soon..

And The GT finishes on ebay at 11:10pm today

soo effectively i should have the moolah to sort out the niggly bits left to do.. and then just plan the route and set off, my uncles alledgely giving me a sat nav if not im sure i can steal my dads tom tom:grin2.

Anyone thinking of doing a similar thing? Safety in numbers and groups and all that jazz.:reading i was originally thinking of booking with the people i see at bikesafe but they want about 700-800 pp quid for what sounded like the priviledge of carrying your luggage??:eyewobble:

Right, so you want 800 quid to remove the £200 luggage set ive had fitted to the bike and carry it??:grin1 (might be a few hotels/meals included but its still overpriced i reckon).:grin2

Edit: sorry i forgot to mention, everyone seems to be assuming im running a 28 year old bike here...im not, the engine was rebuilt back in 1999 with stuff being done to it up to 2005 i believe, have to double check.. but yeah, this bikes had a owner who loved it so much he kept it on the road.. you wouldn't believe it was 28 years old by looking at it, its in great condition.:)

Ditto, I'd even go as far as saying, strap your own bike down, the ferry loaders won't mind it's one less thing for them to do. There are plently of straps & wheel chocks (well there was on the last ferry I used).

You'll never have enough space for spare this'n'that so make sure your bikes up to it, breakdown/recovey might be worthwhile taking out for peace of mind. I used to carry a can of tyre-weld, although I never ever used it on all my trips down to Spa. Make sure you tell your insurance company your going abroad, and remember to pack your V5/licence etc... A small can of chain lube might be an idea if your mile munching.

The roads are good in France,Belgium & Germany, the signs are simple & straightward, the biggest problem you'll have is re-adjusting to driving on the left when you get back into Dover.

Enjoy.....:D

Hope Mr 2E has clocked the news? The cheese eating surrender monkeys are on strike t'other side, and Kent police have started operation stack on the motorways.... Best grab an e-ticket for Le Shuttle while you can, if your planning on going this weekend.
