Just my opinion but I thought the l plate massive, knee down massive, always on the forum etc gave us an indication of how long people had been around on the forum at a quick glance, the fact that some members are now changing their titles to what ever they choose seems to me a bit unfair on those that can't.

I thought that there wasn't going to be a them and us with this members bit, doesn't necessarily look like it so far :laugh1

Sorry if this goes down like a lead balloon it's just my opinion

If you're a 'free' member then you'r stuck with the l-plate massive etc.
If you're a paid up member, you go green and have the option to change your title. One of the priveleges of membership and paying to keep the site going strong.

You can still see how many posts someone has made by looking at their public profile.

No lead balloons, we're all allowed an opinion.

personally, i never liked the l-plate massive or titles anyway... i thought they sounded a wee bit childish tbh.;)

And Its not a divide, its just a perk of being a member...:reading

Same as technically us receiving discounts from various companies is unfair.. but at the end of the day we have paid for the right to do so, and it is FOR charity...:grin2

Btw the titles dont say anything about how long you've been on the forum, its how many posts you have made... look at the 3 year old members who have never posted, they are still 'l plate massives':grin2

Same as anything really, you pays your money, you takes your choice.

What is the choice?

Pay up or shut up?

Do you become park of an elite clique now if you can justify paying up to be an extended member?

Someone clicking "allow custom titles" in the extended member user group will only help the forum look even more divided that it already appears.

Can I just point out before you read this post from The Guvnor that absolutly nothing is changing on this site for existing and new members. Membership to this site and the forum is, always has been and always will be completly free.

I think what is happening with site changes is a good thing, I'm still undecided whether to join up myself or not so I hope nobody takes offence to what is written above, I just think it's going to put off people joining the forum when they have "pay here and be special" put on them as soon as they walk in the door.

Karl I hope you didn't take offence to my post and as I said I think it's a good thing, I didn't say I don't want to join, I said I'm undecided, my decision, my choice.

I'm a big boy, I don't care whether I can write something stupid under my name (because you know I would ;)) or have a different colour, however you have to wonder how it looks to new eyes looking in.

Dan - that probably mirrors the opinion of most on the site that haven't yet joined up.

Its hard to gauge what a new person to the site would think - but I might see if can find out just out of interest - thats a pretty good idea :)

From someone thats well rooted you 'may' have a different perspective as to how it appears to outsiders - its hard to see something from outside the box when you are so involved.

I haven't personally used any of the discounts - but I'd pay money JUST to be able to write something different under my name :laugh1 Not that I actually would, obviously :grin2

Useful post as its highlighted something that is worth finding out.

See Dan! You're good for something! Just please keep your shirt on when I'm there next time. Thanks :D

Cool, You kinda see what I mean :)

When I've tried to get people to join the forum in the past they have backed away as they thought it was a bit of a cliquey forum, I'm just trying to highlight that this doesn't help, especially as I don't think the tea lady had her post answered.

Although it's not because I'm not an extended member, I'll join tonight and quote my posts just to prove it if it helps ;)

I was only pointing out my observation, and yes it would be nice to have had a sensible answer and Dan did say "Can I just point out before you read this post from The Guvnor that absolutly nothing is changing on this site for existing and new members. Membership to this site and the forum is, always has been and always will be completly free"

I also think it is getting a bit cliquey on here lately and Karl I don't think it's Dan that's doing the dividing.

I also think and this is completely nothing against you Jules that, "Likes Extended Members" can and will be interpreted wrongly by those of us who don't necessarily know you.

As I said merely an opinion but if I were a stranger to the site and a bit on the posh side I'd look down my nose at someone in your position advertising themselves as liking extended members, even though we who know you normally respect and value both your integrity and wisdom.

Yes Shane it is trivial so then why don't you open it up to everyone then

I have an opinion and I'm entitled to express it as any other member, sorry guys if you don't like it:grin2

we have another 3 page debate because of the fact some people can change the little titles under their names.
Its not going to be the downfall of the forum is it, lets be honest!

opinions are completely justified. we'd never get anywhere in society without them.

However some are just not constructive and do nothing but upset people and cause unecessary problems.

A lot of these negative oppinions are from existing members who have been with the site for a number of years who believe they know what a new member would think when visiting/signing up. Some may know new members whove said something, but we cant unfortunately please everyone.

We've made it perfectly clear in a number of threads, what the plan is/was with doing all this, whats in it for the member and whats in it for the site.

The hello thread outlines what someone gets IF they decide to sign up to be an extended member, The welcome email that a new sign up gets also outlines everything. We're not here to segregate as nothing has changed with the forum. All we are doing with the extended members bit is givng something back to those who are kind enough to help donate towards the running and the upkeep of the site and for helping us make a donation to Essex Air Ambulance and the other (as yet undecided) charity. It would be a whole different kettle of fish if we asked for membership money without giving anything in return, so its really its a no win situation for those of us who are involved!

We welcome all feedback as it only helps the site continualy improve but there are times when that feedback does nothing but stir up trouble which is a shame, but cant be helped i guess.

This is one of those arguments that will never completely go away, as the older members will always think they are being hard done by in some way as they remember the site before all this took place, and will bring it up again if and when we decide to make another change.

You have to remember, the changes are for the site, not us as individuals. not everyone is going to like change, but its a fact of life that change happens, if you dont like it you can either make a constructive comment about it to the powers that be (if youre worried about it turning into a public argument) or be mature to accept it and try live with it.

This last comment isnt aimed at anyone in particular, its an observation.

Then how else do we the ordinary members find out, we can only ask :)

I didn't reply on this thread to cause trouble, I just thought that a "normal" discussion could have been had and tried to air the initial post into getting a response to the question asked rather than it being brushed aside.

I do agree though to a point though and feel this thread would be better discussed in the gathering section :)

Sit back and have a careful think..

Right I've sat down and had a good think. Just who do you think you are? Your constant sniping replies show just how immature this place is getting. You are in fact the one that needs to take a step back and take a deep breath, people who are unable to ignore wise cracks just make it worse.

What is up with you, you're normally so sensible, you've now totally gone off on one with no point whatsoever. If you want the forum to be a worse place, you are going the right way about it..

Nothing wrong with me I usually ignore stupid wise cracks after I've had my initial say and don't let them wind me up. Unfortunately that doesn't happen with some people and today I fed you the hook and you proved yourself to be one of those.

Why should people put a lot of time and effort into this place when there are some that are dead set on spoiling it..

I whole heartedly support the site and the way it's moving forward and I agree with the extended members area and the discount section within that area. I do however know and have some considerable experience with equality and diversity and actively look for ways of preventing segregation of users. I'm not saying that the change was done without any consideration of the impact it would have on the site or it's users, I'm merely pointing out that it could be a divide we could have avoided.

And lastly, this wasn't a rideout or a gathering so my initial post was put in Romford Market as this is the general chat area, I agree I contributed to the banter and apologise to the rest of the community if this has brought the site down in any way. However I will not apologise for having or voicing my opinion that is what a forum is for.

Its a shame.

The one thing we do agree on today :laugh1

Ok may be not the best thing i've ever done but, here goes.. I'm new on here and I have now payed up to extended membership. The main reason was to help support this website, as its nice to feel like i'm helping in some way. The other reason being was helping support the air ambulance, As I feel one day it might just save me. I dont care what is under my name (within reason). I have found everyone I have spoken to or MET to be very nice and helpfull so there is the last reason I gave up a donation to the group.. Although I think a family membership would be a good idea...
Hope I've not bitten of more than I can chew now...

Im not being funny, we've never got on (which is a shame because i bear no grudge) but think about it, baiting someone for a reaction is something I would do.. i wouldn't expect it from you and your always telling me to grow up and yet you've just openly admitted stooping to my level???:grin3

To quote Dan once again :

'Can I just point out before you read this post from The Guvnor that absolutely nothing is changing on this site for existing and new members. Membership to this site and the forum is, always has been and always will be completely free'

Hes actually stuck to his word.. nothing has changed for you.. you've got the exact same priviledges you always have had.. and membership is, and always will be, Free!

I dont see the issue here Dawn, i appreciate your opinion, but honestly it is a rather petty thing.. if it was something like: 'All extended members got guranteed free drinks at the white hart at meets' then i could understand, but this is a simple perk that comes with the payment.. when the membership started there were 16 companies offering discounts i now believe we have almost double that... so yes its changed somewhat but thats the whole point..

I expected the first argument to be 'why have extended members the only ones with the black t-shirts, whereas in the shop we only have white?'

(balls thats going to cause another now aint it:grin2)

No i make you fully right here, your post is directed in perhaps the correct place of the forum although i think it would be better if it was created in the OI Admin forum, which is, in my opinion, who your post was aimed at.

Personally (And i seem to be sorting out these little problems alot lately) i think we should have a section like 'Flame wars or what not' which is hidden to guests of the forum or less than 25+ posts so newbie members do not have to read through some of these flamed posts.:grin1

Again looks like the works for WonderDan :D

Wow!

We both went fishing and caught the big one ;)

Stick a new thread up in the gatheringz section and ask the actual question, wether or not to have editable titles for the extended users.

It clearly needs asking, Dan will not be against changing it back if the majority want it to be so.

Just when I thought you couldn't get any dumber, you go and do something like this... and totally redeem yourself!

Sorry! Sorry!

Couldn't resist! :grin2

This has always been a site for the people regardless of if they paid money or not. That will always remain and I'm sure that Dan will always do everything possible so it stays that way.

The under name things are just a bit of fun - but as karl says, if its something that would be better given to all or none, then put it to the vote. Dan will always go with what the members want - because as said this forum is for its members - that is his priority.

I do have a childish remark under mine - couldn't resist. Yes of course I may be judged accordinlgy by those that don't know me. People judging is sadly a very popular human trait! I have complete faith in my friends and trust them to do otherwise (as you pointed out :) )

It is human to worry what other people think, but at the same time I would also give any decent human being the benefit of the doubt in so far as I would hope that they would not judge me based on a sarcastic title.

I understand your point that it does happen and that potential new members could get the wrong impression. Although of course, a biking forum is never going to be clean, never going to be happy go lucky :grin2. The key words to back that point are 'biking' and 'forum'.

I could argue that a potential maybe slightly upper class person viewing the site as a potential newbie could also look down their nose at some of the more say 'riske' pictures and comments in various signatures. HOWEVER again, I would not want any of that changed. It is part and parcel of a biking forum I feel.

If I didn't like it, I wouldn't stick around. I think any potential member shouldn't be lulled into a false sense of security. It is what it is.

My motivation behind paying up was first and foremost to the support the site and its support of worthy charities thereto. After all - I try to contribute as best I can by organising things for the majority to enjoy - so why not add a bit to the pot to help it along its way.

Ok! Waffling now!

I do agree that if required the names under handles thing could be voted on if necessary. It wasn't something initially on the list of 'perks' when the changes happened - it was just a new toy that got played with I'm sure :grin2

I don't think jealousy plays any part whatsoever. Dawn is simply expressing an opinion.

Free speech as long as its not getting personal is promoted here - its a forum. She did make a valid point whether its thought to be petty or not and it shall therefore be addressed I'm sure.

And 2E - I like your idea of a flame wars section! OOOOH THE HOURS of FUN we could have reading THAT!
