Okay, I have a niggle can anyone help or explain.
Start off no problem in first, accelerate then go into second, accelerate but when I try third it does not click in, if I gently touch the gearchange with my foot in a downward direction (returning to the neutral position, not neutral gear) I can then try again and get into third.
So I think it maybe the return spring (if one exists)which automatically moves the gearchange pedal back to its normal mid position thus allowing next gear selection.
Is there such a thing and if there is...is it deep within the gearbox or something that can be got at via a cover only?
Sometimes this problme is just the bush on your footpeg. If the lever is too tight it wont spring back. This happened on my first CBR. Now I have roller bearings on my rearsets and its smoooooth as a babys bum to change gear!

Well your comment was right I believe!
You say it could be the bush yet when I look at it the bush on the gearchange seems okay but the shaft is grooved and looks worn! Is the shaft part of the gearbox or a replaceable part?
I would appreciate your help as I am loathe to strip apart and stop me riding my bike while I try and sort it!

have a look at a manual.
if i remember correctly from when i did the gearbox on the zzr, the shaft runs through a change drum, and comes out behind the clutch, i believe i was able to remove the clutch, then unclip the change shaft and slide it out from the gear shift side of the bike.
but that was a long time ago!
what bike is it?
I wuold try a less complex approach first. Have you checked how smoothly and easy the footpeg assembly moves? This is what the problem was on mine. The gearbox and linkage itself worked fine. It was the fact that the toe peg and pivot at my footrest was over tightened on the bush there and was stopping the lever from returning and not allowing me to change gear.
It mostly happend in what ever the longest thrwo is (in your case from 2nd to 3rd).
Hope you get it sorted.

think you should just take the footpeg etc and give it a good clean and a bit of a grease up up or the old WD 40 can do a good job .. best of luck.

The linkage is okay I am sure and the gearbox is positive with no wear (or so it feels) yet when you get hold of the gearchange lever and move it with your hand it does not rorate as such but allows a upward/downward movement so there is wear there.
The bike is a CBR400 NC17 (one before Aero).
I can have a go but dont want to strip down and end up deeper than I want!
There is no manual for my bike except in Japanese (problems with unusual imports!)
So......guess get stuck in and have a go or go to a bike shop and ask advice.

hi again '
you will have abit of play in it as it needs to have that to move, have you checked the ball joints as there can get dry and need a bit of wd , as from what your saying is that the lever etc are sticking , good luck
