was at snetterton on wednesday, on a test day. our session also had some members of the triumph owners club, as more trackspace was needed. the triumph guys had been there tuesday as well, so they were monitored and it was decided that they should be ok to join us acu guys without causing too much trouble... they must have thought that they were great, being 'good enough' to join an acu group!
massively funny! first session, we (acu) hit the track first, T.O.C followed behind... we took it steady to warm tyres and try to remember where the track went, and came round to lap the TOC group on the next lap!
anyway, they're lines around the circuit were ok, not great, but ok, but the biggest problem was they're braking points. theyd come screaming past me on the straights, as i'd expect. as soon as they reached the 300 yard marker, the brake lights would come on and they'd start braking, i'd fly past on the outside, head down, still on full throttle waiting until the 100yard marker!
i nearly rammed one up the back wheel when he stuck his brake on for the first corner (dont brake, drop a gear and feather the throttle...) the back wheel was up in the air on the tzr as i had to get on the brake hard to miss him! corners were great though, a dozen triumphs bottlenecking the corners, 20 acu licensed racers going full pelt thru the corners cutting the way throuh, inside, outside, using the kerb etc! :D :D :D i know i clipped a TOC rider with an elbow when he/she stood it up mid corner as i came past on the outside, with about 20mph more.
anyway, 3rd session, and i'd dropped times ,despite getting the bike sliding thru the corners and pushing harder and harder, it seemed like i was losing about 1.5 - 2 seconds down each of the straights, so pulled in. nasty nasty banging noises in engine, and gear oil dissappeared.
small end bearing collapsed on rhs con rod, piece of bearing shell sat on top of piston then down the back, scoring the piston and siezing the rings (hence the slower laps - lack of decent seal on the piston) and probably a crank seal gone (hence gear oil loss). at present, the crank is locked solid, suspect another bit of bearing jammed under it. bloody glad it didnt jam the crank whilst doing 130+ down the back straight, as i wouldnt be sat here typing right now!
