View Full Version : My bikes about to blow up.... ARRGGGHHH
So whats the score with Yamaha dealers in Essex - I just sat here and phoned every one of them in Chelmsford, Brentwood and Romford and NONE of them will take my bike - Apart from GP's in Brentwood, but they are the most un helpful people out the lot, and cant look at it till monday.
Crap! All i want to do it ride my damm bike :(

What went wrong with it mate?
I only saw the videoclips with you and tim a couple of days ago and its looked like it was running fine then!?
I thought it was fine the day we made those vids - other than a squeaky rear brake and a slipping clutch, whihc are both inexpensive problems. I rode it the day after, and it really felt like it was holding back. It wouldnt even tick over, even after winding the tickover screw right in - symptoms of an engine about to seize.
My main concern, is that i dont get loads of blue smoke anymore when i go to start the bike. I took the morning off today to organise it to be taken in by a dealer (gotta wait till monday b4 they wil look at it) :( so when i found that out, I went and had a fiddle. Took the oil pump cover off, and theres nothing obvoisly wrong. Bled it for a few minutes just to make sure there were no airlocks, and started it. Again, no blue smoke.... in fact, theres was no smoke at all. If i pump the throttle, weeheey, blue smoke... but not loads. Just idling, the smoke looks white - almost transparant.
So, i took it for a burn - when i first got the bike, no matter how long i left it to warm up, when i went down the road, there was always blue smoke in my mirrors for a while... now, it doesnt seem to do that either. ANyway - went for a burn, and really rode the bike hard. Its not as fast as it was a couple of weeks agi, but its much better than it was on monday - but i havnt done anything.
A mate of mine has built/repaired a shed load of TZRR's like mine, and he reckoned from the vids on the site that the engine doesnt sound healthy at all.... so that leaves me one option, Dealer. They said they would have a look at it on monday - reckoned it would take about half an hour to go over it. At least then i'll know, well, i hope so. They might be all thick up there!
ARRRRGGGGHHHHH - I wouldnt mind having the engine rebuilt m8, itd fly then - i just want to know whats wrong with it so at least i know.

Hello mate
soz to hear bout the engine
at least we had a wicked burn today - i was well chuffed - think the mixture and the exhaust valve has helped it once it gets going it comes on song and gets up to speed even if it was down hill a bit - well chuffed!
got it home and stripped the head and cylinder off it - got the feeler gauges and the manual out of it and did a few tests - turns out the rings need replacing which is wicked in a way, bottom end is fine, top end is surprisingly good too. Piston has left deposits on the bore which will be removed with fine wet and dry, or just honed with heavy paper on a stick on a drill, BUT the bad thing is i have to ring up a yam dealer to find out whether my suspicion is right.....I think its on its second oversize rebore!!!
...stay tuned for more info lol!
Monday tomorrow, GP's look at my bike at 9am....... so i get to find out what the dammage is
Dam this wind! good job my bikes not runnung right, or i'd be blown about everywhere!

Dam this wind - it blew my bike over!!!! :x
luckily only busted the headlamp and the plants it was laying on took the impact - saved my bike man!!! it amy be a heap but its MY heap lol!
Took the bike down to GP's thismorning, and spoke to the mechanic there - quite a helpful chap actually. Turns out I do need an engine rebuild
Problems appear to be bottom end, and the bearings have gone... which i thought was strange, cos if you take the alternator cover off to see if the alternator itself moves, its well solid..... maybe he was talking about different bearings, I dont profess to know too much about 2 stroke engines so I didnt comment
I'm gonna get the engine out and send it off to Stan Stevens in Kent, they said it would cost 185 for an engine rebuild plus parts - which is a damm site cheaper than any dealer i spoke to today... plus they are the nuts with 2 strokes. Aparantly they have all the bits already (that made me laugh... a common engine to go :D ) and if anything major has gone (AHHHH... NOT THE CRANK!!!) then at least they have refurbished parts sitting there waiting to be used... which again, should be a damm site cheaper than dealer prices.
No not too bad.... probably gonna end up costing me about 350 quid (thats what im preparing myself for...) which is only double what another engine would cost... but at the end of it i'll know the engine has been rebuilt by good hands.. and it should fly after being tuned by them!
now the fun part... getting the engine out!! lol

hello m8
will be up to help you out soon - just eating me dinner! :)
big end bearings are the bearing or bearings on the bottom or big end of the connecting rod - hence why when you looked at the alternator and tried to move it, it didnt move cos you were tryin to wobble the crankshaft not the big ends
the crank shaft bearings are called main bearings usually - if they go it sounds harder n more knocking and eventually the crank will knock itself to crap running and stuff
:)
seeya in a bit for engine removal
Sucsessful engine extraction last night - up pretty late gettng COVERED in greasy shoyte! My poor (empty) bike... mind you, its gonna give me a good chance to get it all cleaned up.
Took the engine down to the trusty ol' Stan Stephens tunage centre, now I just gotta wait a coupla days to find out the dammage
to be continued.......

That was funny last inght m8! - your bike is naked now man!
my piston rings didnt come - F**king poxy w**kers!!?!?!? I NEEEEEEED piston rings!!!!
check out the vid of 'the drop' lol - tis HERE (http://www.essexbikers.co.uk/videos.htm) under the essex biker clips section.
Checkkkk it!
Well, spoke to Stan the man personally today, and he's taken my engine apart.
Its been rebored a couple of times already which is not a problem, as its only at 1mm at the moment and they have rings up to 2mm (which is equal to 8 rebores!!! lol ) They are gonna rebore it.
New piston needed - its broken, and the engine has already seized several times without being rebored which is probably what caused the piston to break. That means that some twat seized it, then ran it - then seized it, and ran it again without having the engine rebored... what a tit.
Conrod kit and big end bearings going to be replaced.
Crank is going to be rebuilt.
He said that its been mis-treated, but his words were not to worry, cos he's seen worse and he'll have the engine back in pristine condition in a week - which put my mind at rest. Just got to wait for the quote now.

Think of the perfomance!!! :)
FingerZ!
04-11-2002, 11:03 PM
yeah mate think of the performance - it will be the nuts! providing you run it in properly n carefully it will fly!
You are gonna have a bit of competition from me now by the looks of it - hopefully my engine will run like it did tonight all the time now! :D
AT LAST!!! I have the quote.

FingerZ!
05-11-2002, 07:02 PM
oh i didnt realise it was plus VAT!!
madness
small end is the bit that the piston is attached to on the top end of the con rod - its smaller than the big end hence 'small end'
in case you were wondering! :)
yeap - plus VAT, but i can claim that back.
Im just pleased its getting sorted now - and that its gonna have a new oil pump - man thats gonna FLY!
everyone ive spoken to about it reckons im doing the right thing un all which is re assuring - at least ill have a bike that i know the history of and will go like the clappers whilst im building up my no claims innit.
There u go - a bit of money, but worth it in the long run :)
CANT WAIT!

thats it m8 - piece of mind in some ways
i was going to start speding money on mine again and try to get the engine sorted a bit more and get it MOT'able but i have just learnt that my turbo oil seals and possibly my turbo is dying on my car - seeing as its my primary item of transport and i really need it at the oment it looks like i am going to have to buy myself a new one - ****ing crap but hey ho thats just how it is man

OMFG !!!!!!  how much :S erm i new it was gona cost a few quid but f*ck me that is insane!!
Damn Dan thats like 1/3 of the price of the bike :S u gona have it done or not ?? personaly i wouldnt but thats me damn really carnt believe that price ... is he installing gold plated big and little end roller bearings or summut :S
Damn really sorry to hear that ...:(:(
hmmm just had the mrs engine done exact same job cost 180 quid  but then again ur getting it done at stan stephens... and he'll do a much better job ... still an insane price tho !
All in all, its gonna cost me just under 400 quid including a new oil pump and a chain & sprocket set. The labour alone is 180+vat (211.50), but as you say, its stanny baby. I can claim the VAT back, so I havnt got to pay that.
Your a mechanic and if I was you, id say the same. If you spent 400 on your PC for whatever reason, id tell you not to bother but thats cos I know their true value.
The only other option is to get another engine, but i'll only end up sending that up to him to get it tuned - and thats 180 quid, plus the engine will be about 200-250 so thats 400 quid ish anyway.
Dont forget aswell, things are expensive down here
At the end of the day, I dont care how much it costs to get it back up and running. Once its done, itll be the nuts and I wont loose too much money on it. But thats me. I put my car in for a service 3 times a year (every 6k miles) for the same reason - it doesnt bother me. I didnt buy the bike to make money, or even get the money back i spent on it - i bought it for some high revved fun
BWWWAAARRRRRRRR - and i cant wait to get it home :D
FingerZ!
06-11-2002, 05:16 PM
Hell yeah! high rev fun man!
shame it comes at a price!
i enquired about new turbo's today - its soo hard justifying the money in some ways cos i know that my turbo is fine, but whilst i have the money and can get all the parts at a reasonable price aswell as the turbo i am thinking **** it and get it done - then it will be mint but the VFR400 will have to wait a little longer unfortunately
at the end of the day its my main form of transport and as much as i think i hate spending money on it to get it reliable and stuff, deep down i dont mind - afterall, how often do you get a little box of a motor that cripples modified RS turbos and quite a few other things and has only got 42k miles on the clock?!?!
:D
MAN, I WANT MY ENGINE BACK! Whats he doing, rebuilding it? ... oh.... yeah, thatll be me being impatient then :D
I tell ya... when my bikes back up and running, i'm gonna go missing for a week......

500 for direct access....
1k for insurance....
300 for new clobber...
thats nearly 4 k man!!!!
Expensive hobby m8
Cant you stick with the 125 cheapo solution for a year or so like me?
D.
FingerZ!
11-11-2002, 07:19 PM
hmm possibly
will have to see what turns up m8
i still got a lot of saving to do - just dont wanna have to mess about with another 2 stroke engine for a while now ya know?!
i mean, look out our bikes - they are completely opposite in condition yet the amount of money you have had to spend to get it and STILL had engine troubles!!
will definately consider the 125 option if i can get a good enuff 125 for the right price
:)
<got me thinkin again now!>
Woooo - just phoned the 2 stroke peeps, and my Engine should be ready to be picked up on Saturday..... cant wait!

good stuff m8!
just remember to take it easy and dont let it load up in any gear but dont rev it - altho thats easier said than done on a 125 LOL!!
Would you adam and eve it, its making the same knocking noise as it did b4 the rebuild.
I have a feeling the barrel hasnt been bored with the powervalve closed, and seeing as its on its 5th oversize the powervalve is probably sticking out into the cylinder and the piston and/or rings are hitting it. I spoke to stan, and he didnt realise it had a servo... oh dear.
I must have turned the ignition before taking the engine out, which means the powervalve was in its open position :x Still, he told me to give him the engine back and he'd do it all for free which is ok i suppose, but i gotta take the damm engine out again man!
My first thought was why is it doing it whilst idling? well, the powervalve defaults to being fully open when you turn the ignition, but when the engine starts the powervalve shuts and doesnt open again until you hit the powerbland at about 6.5k rpm.
Im gonna open the powervalve right up and dissconnect the servo... then start the bike and see if the noise goes..... heres hoping - ill have to take the enigne out again, but at least thatll be the end of it!
I'll let you know how it goes.

MMMmmmmm! :(
Sorry to hear your bikes not feeling too good...
Hope you get it all sorted mate!!!
Cya :D
As an update to this, I sent the powervalve away to stan and he sent it back to me saying the poston had definatly been hitting it and he had re shaped it to stop the problem.
Well... its either still hitting it, or its dammaged the piston.. so hes apoligised and is gonna take the bike away and fix it all up.
Reey!
Just gotta get it up there now..... :x
