just took the clutch out, fixed the powervalve, got the oil settings right, cleaned everything up. so filled the gearbox oil up after having drained it obviously. put it back together, started fine, ran well for about 8 miles. In the end, conked out! Went straight for the plug, (been having problems with it coking up before), fine. saw no problems, pushed it home, took the pipe off, noticed a massive chunk outta the top part of the piston, gotta strip it right down tomorrow. But, after having set off with brand new, totally full gearbox oil, there was nothing left wen we got it home..?!

Please help with advice, prices (piston, piston rings, small end...), anything you think will help!?

cheers, James

Hi James,

Think I know where your gear oil is going... mine leaked some too, but not conking out or anything. It's a TZR125r '92.

Above 5k it strugless and I have to clutch it past a couple thousand revs to keep going. A friend said it was probably a busted oil seal, and the garage also had the same opinion.

So.. the gear oil was leaking outta the gearbox and into the engine buggering up the mixture. I lost 50ml in about 10 miles when I last checked. Most likely way more now as I can't see any oil level.

I haven't had a chance to get it fixed yet, though just need to get the bike to the garage to replace the primary oil seal.

A ha!

maybe thats what happened to my teaser - would conk out, wouldnt rev up under load, and when i sold it, the chap who bought it off me told me there was no gearbox oil for one, and no 2 stroke oil for another! Yet i was SURE i have 2 stroke in there at least else it wouldnt have run as long as it used to.

Was quite embarressing as i am supposed to bea mechanic and knoe these things yet it took a sunday tinkerer to tell me what was up LOL!

nevermind!

hmmm when u say its empty do u mean u took out the sump plug and it was bone dry or do u mean it wasnt showing in the viewing window?

Did u put 650ml in ? if it is leaking then it can only be going in 3 different places one it could be leaking out of a hole in the gearbox .. which ull only find out by checking for leaks ... did u do up ur sump plug up correctly when u filled it up? i know that sounds silly but when ur in a rush its so simple to forget summut ..

or it could be going into the crank case via the (Main bearing seals) if this was the problem the bike would have been trailing clouds of white smoke and ur end can would be literaly dripping with oil ....
make sure if new ones are fitted they are the double walled type not the crapy cheapo copy single walled ones as they last all of 5 mins .. main seals are about 10 quid but abit of a bugger to change urself not impossible but the fact that they have gone usually indicates that there has been a fault in the main bearings their selves :'(

As for ur piston being mashed up was it at the front in direct line with the exhuast port if so this is usually due to using cheap tiwanese pattern parts if ur gona go for pattern parts try and stick with japanese ones it may cost a few quid more but it pays in the end ..

The main problem with tiwanese pattern pistons is that the ring retaining pins melt into the piston allowing the piston rings to rotate around the piston until it meets an opening IE a transfer port or the exhaust port once that happens, well i dont think i need to tell u but its not pritty..

Good luck
