After a long ride on sunday, I noticed ive now only got full beam and my sidelights on my 93 Jap NC30. The main beam is non existant.

I doubt its a fuse, but is it normal for both to go at the same time?

Also, looking at my haynes manual, the Jap and UK NC30's have different wattage bulbs. Are the UK specs a legal requirement for any NC30 in the UK?

Lastly, am I to assume I need to remove the front faring to change these bulbs?

Cheers.

Dan.

hello again mate, i think its more likely a dodgy contact in the switch that took out both lamps dip beam only, that is quite normal so pull the switch apart and give it a good clean up with a bit of emery cloth or something, the maximum legal ratings for headlight bulbs over here is 60w/55w i dont know about in japan. I think to change the bulbs you may be able to do it with fairings on but be ready to cut your knuckles and that :x .
if i learn more i will let you know

I bought a bulb, and it still dont work - so its gotta be the damm switch.

THe JAP bikes use 35 or 33w bulbs (cant remember which) and we use 55w ones. THe last owner has put 55w bulbs in and not protected the switch with a relay... and so it looks like its knackered the switch. I'll just have to wait till the weekend to take it apart :)

Right.... its turned out to be the HI/LO switch rather than the actual switch that turns the dipped headlights on....

Its well knackered, and i'll probably end up replacing it providing you are able to get that particular part of the switching unit and you dont have to replace the whole unit

For anyone passing by with the same problem, check out the thread i created at 400 grey bike - loads of techies answered.

Just as I thought, dealers only sell the complete lightswitch unit - you cant just buy the HI/LO switch.

£85 :(
