Noticed over the last few days that a number of users have signed up, all seemingly using the same web address in one form or another

http://paris-hilton.maclenet.com/ (in that they all use .maclenet.com )

It wouldnt be so bad if they actually posted something, but i assume its some sort of attempt to later spam the forum with sheeeeeeite :D

I think they would just sign up so someone looks at their website.

its strange that you say that, if i click the link i posted then all i get is a blank white page, and it tells me it has finished loading the page, also i have had a look at the "source" of the page and i can't see anything that would trigger any virus download?

Virus scanner is up to date as of today and that isnt showing anything either :)

Just realised that the virus loaded somehow keeps my outlook express open even when logged off. Fortunately I always keep a back up and have just had to completely reinstall. Bas%*&ds

Really weird, as i am using a trojan scanner that monitors any changes to my registry or anything like that, a decent virus scanner too and i never got nothing like that at all? :)

That problem you had there sounds really weird as Outlook Express can be cleaned and repaired quite easily :)

Admitted I can type without a spill chuker quiter welle :D But I am not a computer expert. It may be a formatting thing, but my modem was still active following close down. I am using Norton security, anti virus etc 2004

The best way to see if anything is connecting to you like that is to run a netstat command from a command prompt ;)

If you are on broadband then close all your browsers and applications

Then from the start menu, look for command prompt, click on that to open a DOS screen, from there simply tap in

netstat -10

That will monitor any connections to the net for a period of 10 seconds and list them, it will do this until you close it down, the best thing to do is leave it on for 5 minutes to see if anything is happening.

If you want to see everything then

netstat -a

This will show all the ports in use by the PC/Modem.

A bit of digging on the security sites via google and you can soon work out what each port controls etc if you are nosey enough :)

Finally if you are getting any trouble on broadband then look at your firewall in the first instance (assuming you are using one?????).

Thanks. I will try this. And yes I am using the norton firewall.

Norton firewall should tell you the moment anything that you havent authorised is trying to use any of your applications illegally.

However i never really liked any anti virus or firewall that you had to pay for, they tend to get their claws into the operating system far too much and can end up causing all sorts of problems (namely hogging the CPU and Memory resources).

I prefer to use AVG 7.0 as the virus scanner, its free and updated every couple of days automatically, and well thought of too.

And for the firewall i am using Sygate Personal Firewall which is also free and shows you the instant you have been scanned or had an intrusion.

Most people get paranoid about it all but its not as bad as it sounds in many cases :)
