Whats the signs that crank seals are leaking?

I've got a Puch Grand Prix which died on me at about 52mph (honest!). It's got compression and a good spark. I've tried everything else so now I'm suspecting the crank seal(s) may have blown out. Before I start stripping the engine are there any simple tests to confirm whether they have gone or not??
