Ok guys, just a thought while i was riding.
I ride a ZZR400 J reg, And have ridden my dads ZZR600 and like it
Is it possible to fit a ZZR 600 engine into the 400 frame, i know that the 400 and the 600 are pretty much the same bike bar the engine.
So is it possible? Has anyone done it? Any potential problems? any other parts i will have to upgrade?
any help appreciated

the fram is not made to take the power and it will have differnt muonting points and the finall drvie will porbly be in adirffernt palce and the block might be bigger and the raditor might mount differnly
but the mian prolem will be the fram twisting and bceling under bower

Im under the impression that the frame is the same on both models, and basically the top end parts of the engine are different. Waiting to be corrected on that by some other sites.

Well considering the ZZr400 was a bored down ZZr600 then i would have thought that it shouldnt be a problem :)
If memory serves (and Veephwoar may be able to confirm although i had the ZZR600) i am sure that its exactly the same engine, it just wasnt bored out to the 600cc ;)

If this is the case, would it be easier/cheaper to change barrells and pistons? Im no mechanic but i do know a few :)

i dont thing it would be as easy as that to be honest, its probably got a different compression ratio etc amongst other things, but i imagine a ZZR600 top end would do the job

Then again it must be easier to slot in a new engine then strip down a top end of another one?

Lateshift is correct, it is basically the bores which are different. Change the barrels and heads and in theory you are there. I seem to remember that the air intakes are sited differently but that shouldnt be too big of a problem. Fit the 600 carbs and you could also get the de-icing kit which will prevent any carb icing on cold damp days. The 600 is an absolute stonker, 150 mph easy. Falling out of love with the 400 already?? Got a viffer750 that should be ready by summer! :grin2 :grin2

that cam shat wouldent work or would the crank shaft with that much more power going throu it and the barell and pistons are the main block so you would have to get i bored out

love the bike, but after a ride on me dads zzr600, it would make my long journey commutes that little bit easier and comfortable! But I cant see the point in buying a new bike because of it. If i split the head though, i have to get it skimmed though dont I?
ZZR600 engines are going cheap on ebay as well :), Now the Speedo is driven by the front wheel i believe so that wouldnt be affected. But it doesnt go further then about 125 so if theres a pin at the other end i may have to take it out. Would the Rev counter work ok on the loom?
i found out on the way to the white hart the other week just how bad carb icing is :)

Dont worry about the speedo, fit a geabox that converts the KPH readings to mph, think it goes up to about 180 on your clock, and you aren't going to go THAT fast. I think HG do one about 30 quid.

As for the rev counter, I would be temped to get hold of the whole 600 loom and fit it along with the engine, not as scary as it sounds, and you know everything will work OK.
why not just sell the 400 and buy a 600...?
if you put a 600 in a 400 frame it will put alot of people off when you come to sell it... i'd also check how it'll effects your insurance...?

Because its cheaper on this specific model of bike mate, well it is in my opinion. I have to ability to store the 400 engine, and chances are one of my brothers will end up with the bike if and when i decide to move on up :)
I really can't be asked, to find a buyer for my bike, go through all the haggling, and then buy another bike from someone that i dont know and cant find the history of.
This is not the same as fitting an engine to a vehicle that wasnt designed to take it, its just a shortcut for me to the 600 route, with the ability to whack the 400 engine back in for one of my many younger brothers!
