You can.
However, the fine for failing to display is usually less (and you don't get licence points) than displaying an out of date or stolen/modified/fake one.
For those that haven't already sent for a new one/duplicate as you have, a quick reminder of what form and how much it costs for a replacement:

I rode around for a while with no tax disk when mine got nicked.
Let this be a lesson, get a colour photocopy and put that in your holder. Put the real one under your seat or in your wallet. No one will look close enough to do you for it!

You get caught with that and its like displaying a stolen one. Bad news.

Erm no its not, think real world for a second. The police pull you over, and look down and see a tax disk, possibly with the word "Duplicate" written on it. Meanwhile you are opening your wallet or seat compartment to show him your valid tax disk.
Strictly its not legal no, but neither is driving at 1mph over the speed limit, id be willing to bet my pension that a copper wouldnt nick you for not displaying the real tax disk. You have tax, and a valid tax disk which is nothing like displaying a stolen one. Im not the only biker who displays a copy, most do it after its been stolen once!
Unless of course you like paying out for replacements.

from what i understand the offence is failure to display. my dad got pulled over years ago on his FZ750 (copper nearly died of shock when he saw the white hair under the helmet!) and he had it in his pocket. he got let off but the copper explained that actually he (my dad) was still in the wrong even if the reason was genuine.
i think you'd have to meet someone having a very bad day to actually do you for it but if they had pulled you over for something else like a little light speeding and were looking to throw the book at you then this could be the thing......
thieving toerags why can't they just get their own? what IS the point?!!!!
