evening all

the CB's chain is looking very sorry for itself. I am assured by daddykins that a good clean with some paraffin will fix it up a treat.

i might be being blind but i can't find paraffin anywhere i've looked (and no i haven't just looked in shoe shops)

where can i source such a fine product? or can anyone else suggest any little nuggets of wisdom?

eternal thanks xxxx

Paraffin isnt as easy to come by these days since other fuels were introduced for heating etc.

I wouldnt waste your time looking for any, just buy some of the spray on "Gunk" from Halfrauds or similar.

Spray it on leave it for about 20 minutes so it really soaks in.

Then (this is where you will develop piles now ;) ) using a nail brush, give the chain a good hammering to work the gunk into it properly.

Once thats done, use some warm soapy water to lift the oily muck off, dry the chain off well and then give it a really good going over with your chain wax or chain lube, whichever takes your fancy.

While you are drying it, make sure you give it a careful look over for any signs of damage to the chain etc and Robert is your Muvver's Bruvver ;)

I bought a large container of parafin from B&Q. I also bought a long thin soft nylon brush which fits into the neck of the container and can reach into the parafin. I hunker down next to my DR350 chain and just dip the brush into the container, then brush along the chain to remove the grit mud and crud from the O rings and rollers. Then I leave it to dry for 30 minutes and re oil the chain with any spare oil I have lying around, including ex-sump oil. I put this oil on the inside of the chain only then spin the rear wheel which pushed it into the chain with centrifugal force when it goes around the sprocket.

On my other bike which is mostly for road use, I just leave the Scottoiler to do the work for me and change the chain every 30,000 miles.

Ask Superstacker to get hold of some avgas for you ;)

If they are still using the same grade as Kerosene, its much better than parafin and feels more like thin diesel, wont rot the seals in the chain either :)

Although if i recall correctly paraffin is actually a refined version of kerosene anyway so if you can get hold of it them go for it :)

:) We dont tend to hold a great deal of avgas these days, as most of the fleet are jet turbine engines.

I do have a large quantity of AVTUR which is like diesel although a little bit lighter in density (therefore thinner).

Missappropriation of such a product would be illegal, but its stored in such large quantities (we're talking 136k litres sometimes!) that i know a missing litre of waste fuel wouldnt go missed :)

It does mean that i have to carry it on the back of the bike back from stafford though lol.
