i've just got into bikes and got myself a tidy lil tzr125 1990. i know a little about mechanics but being a newcomer i've got lil hands on experience with bikes. so i need a lil help.
the bikes not running right so somethings up wi the carb. first time i took it for a run it was running too rich and fouled up my plug and i had to push the bugger home. what a welcome to biking! got a couple of people to have a look and fiddle and it ended up he turned the oil down a bit. so its been runnin but it doesnt feel very smooth. it has its moments. its great fun but i gotta get it sorted. its starts fine, unless i dont run it for a day and then its a right pain. smoke fills the garden, and doesnt tick over on its own until much revs, smoke, and aggrevated neighbours later. i've been told to take it to a garage but that could be expensive. any ideas?
once thats sorted and i get used to riding i wanna get more power. i heard u can play with the power valve and the restrictors in the exhaust but more info would b greatly appreciated. the cheaper the better cos moneys tight at the mo. cheers

1990... is that an english TZR or a grey/imported TZRR?

What colour is the smoke?

When you say the oil was adjusted, I assume you mean the 2 stoke oil pump. How did he adjust this and do the notches align correctly? (see oil pump settings thread for pics - http://www.essexbikers.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=159)

And a nice new carb clean would help it out a lot i had the same problems with mine! plus maybe replace the main jet in the carb maybe a bit worn by now! way to power up your bike is to try to get your hands on a micron exhaust (if you can) if not just any racing exhaust for the bike and also get your hands on the full YPVS system makes the diffrence bog standed TZR does bout 80mph tops down hill with the wind behind her! but with the YPVS you should hit 100+ and with a micron should give it more stability getting up to there!! if you dont have the powervalve kit then you still should ahve the powervalve itself inside so you will have to open it up fully but one of the techies can tell you how to do this cause my experiance is limited he he!!!

First thing id do is put ur oil pump setting back to where it should be u should never reduce the amount of 2 stroke going to ur engine,

Is the oil bluey grey ? or white???
If its bluey grey first thing id do is clean the airfilter forget the carb the only thing thats gona get blocked on that unless its been stud for 12 years is the float needle and if thats stuff blocked etc ull be ****ing out fuel everywhere so anyway clean ur airfilter eliment take the sponge out slap it in some petrol or wash it with soap and water which ever u like now making sure its dry put a drop of 10-40 or 15-40 gearoil on it rub it around so its all over it now .
If this hasnt fixed it then we move onto another cause is the choke stuck on??
If its not that then it can be only one other thing ur oil control ring has worn and isnt doing its job correctly so its gona be a rebore and piston and rings depending on the amount of ware on ur bore ..
rebore is about 15- 20 quid piston and rings 35-45 quid depending on if u want cheapo tiwanese parts or japanese copys id go for the japanese parts cuz ive had so many problems with the tiwanese parts ...

If the oil is white then im afraid its a crankcase seal and ur engine is sucking the oil out of ur gearbox into the combustion chamber not good the seal its self is cheap and easy to change although if u have no noledge of engines id get a mechanic to do it, but the problem is if the crankcase seal has gone it usually means main bearings have gone aswell because the main course of the mainseals wearing out is the bearings have worn out and the crank has been moving up and down slowly wearing away the seal :(
Not allways the case sometimes they just wear out for no apparent reason but if u do have the mian seals changed get the mechanic to check the mains while hes there .

hope this has helped

A carb strip down and clean up once in a while is always good.
