Hey all,

me again
asking for help again
sorry....... again

So basically, when i start up the bike after it's been stationary a while, it produces a bit of white smoke out of the exhaust for a while, then that clears>

Also smoke comes from somewhere lower down, not sure of the source, i know there is a small amount of seepage from the fuel tank and i always assumed it was the petrol heating and burning off. but it will produce white smoke after it's been driven for a while.

I've check the coolant levels and the temp gauge isn't saying its hot>
So any ideas whats causing this smoke?

Cheers

Sue you ain't got a blowin exhaust.. small hole somewhere in the system..??
The petrol would'nt make a white smoke, that'd burn away as soon as it hits a hot surface..

Hey,

I have very little knowledge about bikes,
My friend suggested it wasn't attached properly, could that be the cause?
How would i check that?
Also for the hole theory,
Would i remove the exhaust to check for that?
If there was a hole, would it be a fixable thing or would i have to replace it.

I have the offer of two TZR engines and exhausts. If i got them, i could try the different exhausts and see if it continues.
I'd need to arrange that though.

If you have the engine tickin over and run your hand along the exhaust system (makin sure not to touch it as it will be damn hot) and feel on your hand for a blowing, ( as the pressure comes out of the hole). If you do feel a slight blowing on your hand then you've found the hole.. Also try this on the joints of the system.., may just need a tighten up. As for a hole, dependin on the size (probly quite small) there are repair products you can buy from most car shops..

If you suspect that the exhaust is blowing, place a cloth over the end of it while its running, as soon as the collector/expansion chamber fills the back pressure from the exhaust will soon find the hole, make sure you use a cloth though because if you use something that isnt porous to a degree you can end up blowing gaskets anyway (and a cloth wont allow the pressure to build up too much before it leaks).

And white smoke is normally coolant/water in the engine and not oil or fuel ;)

Seemingly white smoke from the old TZR's is quite common as its vapour being heated off, if the smoke has a blueish tinge to it though its pretty likely down to the piston rings on their way out and allowing oil to seep through into the chamber, or that the feed from the 2stroke oil container is too strong ;)

I tried the hand test, feeling for air.

The parts i could get my hand to felt nothing, i'll try the cloth test tomorrow.

Is it perhaps a problem they can sort out on a service?
I've been quoted £150 for a full service and MOT.
Is that any good?

its not too bad i suppose but given that its a stroker as long as that covers the parts then there really isnt a great deal to it.

the MOT is £23.80 anyway, the rest is just filters/fluids/plug etc etc

Jet's getting her ZXR400 serviced for £80 plus parts so i would say its about right ;)

If its got a leak of some sort it shouldnt take someone servicing it too long to notice it, if you have an overly oily mixture going into the cylinder then it should be spotted when he changes the plug to start with so fingers crossed, if its a water leak into the exhaust again the plug should show signs of contamination too.

As for the exhaust noise, most mechanics can spot a blowing exhaust a mile away due to their inquisitive nature, if he doesnt pick it up on the service, you can bet he will for the MOT ;) :D

I wouldnt be overly concerned though :)

Whereabouts in Norf Landan are you then?

Southern Cross are in Kilburn and they are pretty handy with both the prices/advice and the spanners when it comes to 2 strokes, and especially Italian ones as they are an Aprilia dealer, if in doubt they will give you some free advice, always have for me in the past :)

Hiya,

I'm in Edgware, but I have a mate who lives in Kilburn, down the road from southern Cross.

I've got all the bits needed for the service, except the air filter foam and brake pads, but they are coming (once i finally identified my wheels/bike)
So the only thing to charge for is labour. I've bought all the oils/fluids. I've fitted all the spares i bought (clutch cable, indicators, brake lever, fuel tap cover etc)

The guy who's doing the service said he'd give it a thorough examination too, more than the MOT requires. He knows i know nothing about bikes or the condition of my one, it could be on deaths doorstep for all i know.

2 strokes always smoke when you first start them up. Its pretty normal. Wouldn't worry about it.

Throw some Redex in the petrol that'll make it smoke even better.....Hahaha

When we were young ,on our 50cc machines, we used Castrol R 2 stroke oil (for the full on smell of Moto Racing) and Redex (for that mad blast from the line effect) it worked quite well, loads of smoke everwhere and the smell was Fantastic.......:laugh1 :laugh1

I hate being in an allcomer race where I have to sit on the grid behind the 250's. Cant see a bloody thing when we set off from the lights!

Howdy,

Thanks for the feedback, i'll have to try and get some Redex, sounds like fun.

You are aware that i'm trying to stop it smoking? lol
But if i do want tank mode, i know how to do it.
