View Full Version : SV650 ECU Unit
Right.......I want to replace the restricted ECU with the original ECU unit, before I start stripping the seat, tank and everything off to find the ECU unit, does anybody know where I can find it? Cheers

how do you mean restricted ECU Kev?
are you talking about unleashing the full power of its gear ranges and throttle positioning?
If so you shouldnt have to, it should just be the case of fitting a TRE (Timing Retard Eliminator) this is a £20 dongle if you shop around (especially on Ebay) that plugs into the box and eliminates the restrictive settings that are programmed into the ECU at the factory.
It also smooths the throttle out too and makes it less "on/off" :)
And the ECU on a bike is normally a within hands reach of the battery or mounted at the rear end of the bike for the most part, its not normally something that is hidden away :)
Hmmm, having thought about it, when these bikes get restricted for new riders, do they actually restrict fully the ECU? i now assume that is what we are talking about here?
this link http://www.sv650.org/sv_manuals.htm has all the manuals and should show you around ;)
According to some of the manuals on there it makes no mention of an ECU as such but it does mention the Ignitor which is responsible for all the normal ECU stuff and it is mounted right at the rear of the tail unit i shoujld imagine directly behind the tail light assembly :)
Mick
When my son bought his bike new he had to buy the restricted unit, and now he can unleash the beast within, we have the original non-restricted unit and all we have to do is unplug the one thats on there at the moment, and plug in the all singing all dancing one in, have had a look under the pillion seat but it aint there.
I've tried to look at the manuals for SV650 2003 + but it seems the all the files are damaged and can't be repaired................ as Jetski would say 'pffffffffff'

Well if it isnt there then it must be the ECM (Electronic Control Module) that is mounted parallel to the battery about an inch away from it under the seat area of the bike??
it should be easy to spot because there should be a fuel pump relay and also the starter relay sitting the other side of it so its sandwiched in between the 2 relays and the battery, it should only be a small black box the size of a fag packet with a multi connector wiring harness coming off it :)

Just spoke to a friend who use to have an SV, he thinks its mounted right back near the tail piece and it may be on its side on a rubber mount, says its right out the way if it isnt where Lateshift said. Maybe that helps maybe not....lololol:jumping2

according to the 2003 manual the ECM (pictured) is situated next to the battery which appears to be under the seat area.
however on the 1999-2002 bikes, the ignitor (which was replaced by the ECM on the 2003 model) was positioned as mentioned right up at the back of the bike behind the tail light.
This was confirmed from a website i found where someone was detailing how to fit an undertray on a 2001 bike, it showed a picture of the Ignitor (termed ECU) by the author, having to reattach the box after having cut the original tray and it remained where it was removed from on the rear end of the bike.

Thanks again Mick for posting this for Kev, he's been searching the internet and pulling his hair out all day (not that there's much to pull out) :grin2 so much so that he's frazzled his brain and can't spell geezer as opposed to "gezzer"
