the reason its slow is because it will be clogged up with all sorts of crap that you cant see, if its running 1meg of Ram and the CPU is a decent enough spec then its software thats causing the bottleneck ;)
Is there any specific program that you are trying to run that appears slow, or is it just taking ages to do anything?
If its got a DVD player in it and Laura has mentioned that its a Rewriter too then there isnt anything to suggest that it isnt a combi ;)
Tried running disk cleanup and defragmenter?
Using a decent spyware cleaner like Adaware and a spyware innoculator like Spyware Blaster (one cleans and one stops it getting back on)
On broadband? are you using a firewall like Sygate or ZoneAlarm
Antivirus? (dont use Norton it slows the PC down massively) something like AVG7.1 ;)
And lastly how full is the hard drive?

Uninstall Norton and Mcafee trust me on this ;)
they embed themselves so deep in the operating system for no good reason and hog the CPU cycles at will, if you install a free firewall like Sygate and then stick on AVG7.1 (which detects virii that Norton seems to miss anyway) it will run so much better after its been cleaned up ;)
And if Jon can't get round there then just give me a shout :)
