went to cadders on saturday, had running probs with the 250, making maybe around 30bhp!!! still got the front well up over the mountain, and even managed to beat a few 400's thanks to the twisty woodland section and the Rookie400's inability to take corners! didnt get any pics though... Although the tzr was playing up, i had a couple of races in a honda blackbird powered supersidecar... WOW!!! could that thing accelerate???!!!!

anyways, heres some shots of me on the teezer from a meeting earlier this year at lydden. (copyright braking-zone.com, thx neil!)

All that ive gotta pray is that i dont run out of money

trouty how much did it cost you last season to run your TZR??

Simon
11-12-2003, 08:14 AM

simon, how old are you?

i'm not sure if you'll be able to get a license to run 250's?? check with the acu first.

ok, my tzr cost me £300 to buy (not running), £10 to repair (2 spark plugs!)... about £50 in bits n pieces converting to quick release fuel supply, £100 for a days worth of dyno testing. £250 for a set of tyres.

i did 8 meetings with the tzr's, plus 2 meetings in the 400's 9on the tzr), 1 test day at lydden, 1 test day at brands, and a half day at mallory. and a trackday at cadwell near the end of the season to test the exhausts. i changed tyres halfway thru season. half way thru season i had a top end tune/rebuild at £375.

my entry fees would have been about £100 a throw give or take, and test days would have been about the same (except mallory at £40). then maybe 28 litres of fuel and a litre of quality 2t oil each weekend... and food, and transport to/from.

so for 10 meetings, you'd be looking at:

bike (you'll get one for £800-£1000)
mid season top end rebuild (£200-400)
tyres (lets assume the bike has a good set on it already) £250
entries approx £1000 (but you can do these as and when u can)
fuel/oil £200 (working on approx £20 per meeting)
food/transport maybe £500

thats ur basic stuff. add to that: accident repairs, insurance, spares. if the crank go's on the engine then anywhere between £500-1000 depending on what else it takes out (to give u some idea, my crank is being rebuilt right now, purely as a preventative measure before it does go... it's costing me £750... crank rebuild, new p/valves and being honed to my original tune, right barrel honing, head re profile, plugs/gaskets etc.) oh, dont forget u might need some new clutch plates... friction plate set is £40, steel plates are tenner a throw if u need them. sprockets (ok, i been a bit tight on these and only bought one... so i got a 41t rear for snett, and a 43t rear for all others, but i'll be getting a 42t for brands/silverstone i think) £20 a time. clip ons, rearsets, exhausts (stock exhausts are best for power, but bad ground clearance and heavy, and they tend to snap! you WILL need spares!

so... u COULD do it on the cheap... put your entries in as and when u can afford to. i ran the first half of this season on a bog standard engine and did alright!

oh, i've costed it approx working on doing 10 rounds. there are 20 rounds in total!

try mz's if u wanna go cheaper. and dont laugh. they are as serious about theyre racing as anyone, and one of the closest competing classes about. a set of tyres will last a whole season and beyond. in fact, if you go to the bemsee website, in theyre forums is a poll on which class had the best racing, and i believe the mz's are winning it at the moment!

2 years then....

just get saving! racing is always changing. who knows, the tzr's may not be running in 2 years time.

Tark

I would have said you would be able to race for £3k a year but you will only be able to do it if you are wise with your money.

Sorry to drag up an old thread.

Seems like everyone goes through the 'I'm gonna race a TZR250' stage then...

I'll assume you abandoned it Si?

We could all share costs, 3 of us go in as a little team? Just a suggestion.
