View Full Version : problem?

OK. I'll try and explain what seems to be the issue and if anyone has any idea's, please, please let me know what it might be and possible remedy.

I have an 89 Honda VFR400 nc30. It has been fine for the last few weeks but over the last few days, the bike seems to "grate" (for want of a better expression) when getting towards 6000 rpm and becomes very noticable above 7000 rpm. It is more the sound of the bike than any physical problem - it just sounds a bit rough above 6000 rpm. I haven't really pushed any further and shifted gear to keep the revs down so I don't know if it continues right through.

I haven't looked, poked, prodded etc at anything yet as my mechanical ability is negative 32 below zero.

Any help, ideas and advice is greatly appreciated and fully deserving of a beverage of your choice at the reopening of le coeur blanc.

cheers

1. Check The Oil Level!!!!!

That is the one thing I did do. Showed just under half full. did it again 2 hours later and it showed a lot lower. Just been to John Pease and picked up some more oil.

I was really hoping it wouldn't be something so simple that I had to embarrass myself again although I will be glad if it is.

Anything else it could be to spare my blushes or is that the easiest pint you've ever earnt ? :clap

Need a bit more info as to whether it gets worse the higher up the rev range, they have gear driven cams these bikes so it could be a problem with one of them :)

BE STANDING FOR THE NC30 EXPERT!!!

Errrmmmm.... i have no idea :D:D

Ginding noise.. i'd say check you chain and sprockets, coz if its getting worse at higher revs it could be related to the load on the chain thats making the noise..

It might also be the clutch having a barney. Mine used to slip at certin revs and that somethimes sounded like a grinding noise, so it could be that.

If you've got oil, it might be worth doing a full oil change and the filter while you're there, just for piece of mind... You'll need a 10w40 SEMI synthetic oil.

Hummm, that's bout all i can think of at the min, i'll post back if i think of anything else...

I just topped the oil up for now and was going to take it out and see if it helped but dropped cheese on toast on my nads and got burnt. So I'll know on the ride to work tomorrow if that the oil helped.

The air filter is UNDER the fuel tank.....I'll be buggered if I'm pratting around with that.

Checked chain and sprockets. All fine. No tight spots, lubed, sprockets fine.

Got Putoline 10W40 semi synthetic oil

One more thing...got new speedo cable - went to put it on and I just can't get the bloody screw out that holds the cable at the engine end. Any idea's on removal ( yes - I tried a screwdriver :grin2)

cheers

LOL...... you need to take the speedo drive off mate. Get an 8mm socket and undo the 2 bolts holding to thefront sprocket cover.. then and screw the screw and pull :D

Right....got the speedo cable sorted (new drive for nowt from a nice bloke on 400greybike) so now I know how slow I'm going.

Decided to take the bike apart -

fairings off = good.
Fuel tank off = good.
Air filter = manky - caked in **** so ordered a new one off Ebay and should be with me by the weekend

Put bike back together with no problems. Covered in grease and road ****. Had a fag. Felt like a bloke (not that way).

So...I have another question.....

I have noticed over the last 3 days (although it may have been going on for longer) that even after riding for only 10-15 miles - There is quite a bit of heat coming from the RH side (through the hole in the fairing - just below seat. The temp gauge shows normal temps though.
Coupling this with the rough sounds over 5000rpm - is there an engine problem I need to get checked?

I have had carbs mentioned to me - might they be the problem?

If anyone has any advise and a rough idea of price to get sorted, I'd be eternally grateful.
The bike needs some work to get her back up to scratch, but I don't want to do cosmetics if the engine is buggered.

Cheers

Darrell

i hate em and everyone else on here agree's they are a bunch of idiots, so it might do ur bike more harm to go there than good

Oh...OK. Sorry..I didn't get what you meant.

I did ring them a few months ago for some brake pads and the guy that answered the phone said he didn't know anything as they were "new owners and the bloke that knows about "this stuff" was out"

Made me wonder but then I only get small things from them....and they are just around the corner.

So - on this matter, who would you recommend for parts / clothing / bikes etc?

I don't agree, and I have NEVER had a problem with John Pease Motorcycle's, we have bought ALL of our Bikes from them and have never had any trouble with their servicing :p

So please don't include me in your statment..........'everyone else on here agree's they are a bunch of idiots' ;)

As for the heat from the V4 engine out of the right hand side, i beleive from reading the ride magazine a few weeks ago this is completely normal, apparently theres not much space for heat to escape except right there!

^^ OK. Thanks for that.

Just wanted to make sure rather than having to throw myself 100 meters into the air when my bike exploded.

Quick question - Is it normal to have to start a VFR400 with full choke on?
