just wondered are there any signs i can look for to see if my bike is a certain write off
e.g. scratch frame, dents, and things like that

To be honest Alec, its only the obvious things like dents/bends in the frame/sub frame/swingarm that actually make a write off.
But in theory its the actual frame of the bike that is licenced under the V5 so any damage to that has to be looked at for further possibility of the frame being out of alignment, i do know that if a frame is dented its not an immediate write off, until such time as its been on a jig and tested.
If it looks bent, then its probably done for though, the only other thing that writes a bike off is when the damage goes beyond economical repair and book price of the bike ;)

In my experience when the front wheel touches the petrol tank and the rear wheel is no longer attached to the bike = write off
