Hoping someone can shed some light for me. Am guesing lateshift, ricky or stu will definatly know.....
Just out of curiosity what are rear sets actually for?
I know they bring your feet up a slight bit, to put you more into the 'race' position but are there any other reasons for them? And why are they so expensive?
Paul
They tend to be further back as well as higher.
I assume to acheive the ideal racing profile
ground clearance... exhaust and fairings will go down first
easier to weight the pegs in bends
puts your legs in a better position to grab the tank with your legs
improved gear change and brake pedal feel (roller bearings..etc.. gear change is normally alot better)
adjustable ones allow you to tailor position of peg and levers to wear you want them
and most important... they are trick..trick..bling...bling

AH ok, so it stops pegs catching on the floor then?
Any point of having them on a road bike? Or is it really just for the track? Although if you say it helps make gear changes smoother i suppose its a plus for the road too?
Also from a tarts point of view who likes pics of KD, is it easier to get KD with normal pegs or rear sets? or does it not bake a difference?

Every thing two said.
They are so expensive cos they have to be cut on a machine thats cost money to run etc or some hand make them

with the pegs adjusted higher its harder to GYKD.. you have have have more lean to touch down which also means going faster too

i think the price is comparable with new standard rearsets from a dealer to be honest..
after you add up the price for a dealer :
2x heel plates - £10
2x pegs - £10
2x hangers - £50
1 x gear pedal (and gear change rod) - £40
1 x brake pedal - £40
and bolts - £10
thats about £230 for standard rearsets from a dealer then.. rearsets don't seem so expensive anymore (of course ebay is lots cheaper)
i think they look pretty :grin2
oh..so.... pretty ;)

They're to move the pegs upwards, and backwards. Normally by about 2.5cm, although the good ones are adjustable for you to tailor your seating position.
Bemsee require pegs with rounded ends so they don't fit between someones ribs.
TWO pretty much covered it. On something such as an R6 you shouldn't have too much trouble with pegs getting in the way.
You can also get 'jack up plates' that just bolt on where your pegs normally would, and are a little plate that just moves your normal rearsets up and back. I need some for the bandit, but Bandit ones are quite expensive.
I suspect the main reason most people have them is tart factor.

So there is no real need for them on the R6?
Think i'll just keep my plain boring pegs then, until money falls into my pocket (hopefully soon, if my claim comes through :skip )

If Lateshift reads this he will tell how he was practically hanging off of his gixer at Lydden to try and get knee contact, but his rearsets are so high and far back that he'd have no chance, without laying the bike down flat! Try and find some pix of him riding it and you will se what I mean, his heels are practically touching cheek. ;)

ACU regulation stipulates that they should have rounded ends

Yup, here i am, footpegs up my hoop and all :D
Rearsets are all well and good but most of them are prepositioned further back and up, the adjustable ones really require a bit of thinking about or you end with a setting like mine (that doesnt really inspire confidence and leaves you chewing the complete edge of a tyre trying to get out of the saddle :D ).
I tried and tried on the last session to get closer to the ground, but seriously have to think about the rearset position before i try that again, maybe if i was 6ft 5 it wouldnt be a problem, but for me to have got my knee down on that bike i would have had to hang off like a baboon, they really were that high :D
I had the same problem on my 99 RSV, in fact i measured the distance of them from the ground and worked out that for me to have actually reached the floor with my knee, it would have meant leaning the bike to something like a 60 degree angle
i mean come on! :D :D
A bit limited as to what i can do to the Gilles rearsets, they mght look nice but the big chunky bit of bling that does all the adjusting, isnt actually very exhaust friendly and would require a slightly different shaped link pipe for me to actually adjust them :(

The ones on the MZ are also so uncomfortable it's physically painfull to do a 20minute trackday session.
Although they do improve ground clearance by so much the crank cases deck out first.
I can still get my knee down too, can't I paul ;)

yes but you have legs like Crazy legs crane and get your knee down in a straight line anyway! :D
for some of us more gravitationally challenged people its slightly more difficult without the added problem of having to tuck your heels in your waist band because of where the rearsets are! :D

you have longer legs than me and you have standard rear sets, you should be fine :)

You look more like dropping it as your so tense. Was it it your first track day?
Next one practice getting off. Its easier than you think just got to get your brain around thinking that your gonna fall off cos you wont.

Exactly what I am half way through doing mate. Crashing the new one was not part of the masterplan though. :(
