So as most of you have seen , I managed to gently slide off of my bike at Lydden and have scratched the paintwork down one side. It has got to the point where I have had to do something about it as it looked ****e!.
So on sunday I decided to remove the stickers and re-paint the whole panel again (with no painting skills!).
The first part I did which is on the front upper fairing came out pretty well considering , but the side fairing panel has become bit of a nightmare!
Every time I paint it ( about 2 1/2 cans of paint now) and then sand the top surface with wet and dry , the paint keeps coming off on the edges and there are so many holes in the paint work I keep having to sand it so much the primers shows through!
The pictures below show some of it but any tips would be greatly appreciated before I sand the entire panel away!!

with out seeing the panels its hard to tell whats wrong , did you use a plastic primer under the primer ? how well did you rub the primer down first ? are the holes describe through the paint and into the primer or plastic? it could be fisheyes caused by not cleaning the panel properly , any wax etc left on the panel contains silacon which causes this problem

hope its a help rob

I cleaned then after removing the stickers with acetone and then used a tack cloth to remove any dust. The holes more like orange peel on the paint and as I am sanding it down after it has dried it is so bad that primer shows through before it is completely flat. I did get bored with sanding down the primer though!! Could this be why??.
Also the very edges of each panel dont seem to have as much paint on them?

sounds like your problem is not enough film thickness and the edges are always have less paint on than the centre , are going to the pub tomorrow night can have a chat then

You sure you got the right paint it sounds like the paint is reacting to something

i shall agree with everyone else, the paint has reacted to some sort of chemical previously used that has to be cleaned off, orange peel affect is the huge give away

to start with did you take the paint back to the primer coat, and if so did you prime it first???

once its primed and then rubbed down again, it can be painted and then rubbed down some more, and then a second coat that should take ;)

there are 2 main cause's for orange peel ,paint to thick /not likely from a areosol can or paint put on to dry , my thinking is the later first timers are way to worried about runs etc more than the paint going on to dry

The two main causes for Orange Peel is that the paint is too thick (already mentioned) and the surface of the material being painted or the paint is too warm which leads to it drying too quickly :)

cant say for sure with aerosols but normal paint when warm will be more runny (sp) same if the panel is warm , I always preheat panels etc before painting even more so in the winter what it does do is make it dry a lot quicker which gives the effect of orange peel , most areosols are **** from the likes of halfords if you want proper paint in aerosol form most paint factors can do this but it is more expensive than halfords , for robs bike i would say he needs a basecoat black and a clear laquer on top to match the origanal finish both available from paint factors in aerosol
