As I remember it that engine has fins on it, you will have difficulty getting between the fins.

You can get quite a good engine cleaner and degreaser kit from Halfords, its two bottles, one to degrease and one to clean (cant remember the name of it but it comes in a box with two different coloured aerosol bottles in it.)
As for getting in between the fins, once its been degreased you could try using a thin piece of wood wrapped in wet and dry to remove any oxidisation on the alloy :)
As for actually polishing the engine I have always used Autosol for Aluminum.
Just remember once you start your be doing it forever as it never stays shiney

You will be there all winter polishing it with Autosol, you need a polishing kit and an electric drill. you can get polishing stuff from HG or Screwfix.
