just brought home next seasons race bike... 620 monster. got a few bits to do before its ready to roll but sounds so purtty thanks to the one off zorst and open airbox thats fitted up :)
having not ridden one of these before (apart from once briefly in the paddock at snett), its going to be a learning curve as im far more used to high revving strokers and IL4's...
anyways, i'll pop some pics up of before (how it stands now) and after (err, after) at some point!

not too much done just yet, have modified the seat position from where it was into a lower front to give more of a regular sports bike feel, added some side pods to direct air to the reg/rec and just given it a check over

This should be interesting as i go to watch these when i watch New Era and if what i have been reading on other websites is correct it looks like you may have some company too :)
Its a 620, you can get away with riding them like you stole it, it certainly shouldnt give you any problems given that you are used to racing already and you will adapt to the V Twin style in no time at all :) :)

at the moment, no. Except the moped mayhem 3hr scooter race in a couple of weeks time. But ya never know! :)
if i was going to Brands on the 750 again, i'd be looking for consistent 53's with a spattering of the odd 52 for good measure. we only took it to brands once to trackday (shared between 2 people) and once to race, and as it was the first race of the season, none of us were particularly used to the bike.

bodywork has now been removed and sent away for painting :) i've carved a piece around the clutch cover on the right side, and carved out the piece on the left side that was designed for a side stand. the fairings are from 748/916/996 and still the gsxr750 seat. only real changes to the bike, since visiting the dyno, has been a permanent modification to the airbox and change of air filter, and some work on the rear shock to get it how i like it.

had alloy bracket made up in 2 pieces for headstock mounting the fairing, as the monster obviously doesnt come with any sort of fairing stay mounting points. and some little bracket bits to go on the trellis to hold the fairing sides into place.
the tail is k4/k5 gsxr750
the little sidepods under the seat unit are original monster. cable tied into place for proper racer fitting :)

I was just looking at the 2006 Brands time sheet to see how your first go would compare wit normal times as opposed to the lap record but looking at the times Domski ran it was obviously wet so that was a waste of time.
I noticed its a pretty small grid though (18). Do you get your own grid or do you have to share with another class?
troutslayer
13-03-2007, 05:30 PM
There's 2 classes - class a = 620cc, class b = 583cc pre injection. They were all out on grid, but classes were split on the results sheets. this year, there's about 70 registered riders. I'm not sure what the split between class a and class b is, but reckon its probably about 50/50 split. We have 2 grids anyways :D
Heres the results of Brands Hatch in 2005. This was the 5th race meeting of the season, so everyone should have been well into the swing of things by this point...

Yeah but the times only tend to close up they don't get that much faster at the front so looking at that even if the front runners were on lap record pace, knocking off the usual actual race second or two you're gonna be well on the money then.
Didn't realise Mr Hoyles raced the Desmo class. Poor 'ole boy was a bit of a sorry state at Brands this weekend hobbling around with a fractured pelvis.

you know what was funny?? my R&G's arrived saturday. I opted NOT to fit them (although i did fit the fork protectors as that didnt involve removing engine mounts).
My team mate had crash bungs. He had a small crash on friday testing at druids, which destroyed footrest, clip on and brembo m/c. He also crashed out of the first race at clearways, and quite ironicaly, ended up borrowing my shiny R&G's, with the instruction that i wanted them back just as shiny.

Those times in an SBK400 race wouldnt be shoddy but they wouldnt be in the top 10 thats for sure, the front running pace at the moment for the top 5 is staggering at the moment
To stay in the top 5 at the moment if you arent consistently in the 1.17's or lower you tend to be playing catch up from a long way back, even at the higher end of the 1.17's one slip tends to result in someone climbing all over you, the competition and performance of the bikes out there at the moment really is that high :)
troutslayer
16-04-2007, 12:59 PM
we're talking about 2 entirely different specs of machines here, from 2 different decades. For a YPM to drop into 1'18's is staggering. No, of course it wouldn't run in the top 10 of the 400's. Certainly not at a power hungry circuit like Snett.

I'm not sure to be honest Trouty, I haven't been camped with the YPMers this year. I did speak to Micheal briefly but he was with Keith Rossiter so as you can imagine he didn't get much of a word in. :grin2
I'll have a look at the programme tonight.
He was over a second faster than Pat Herron and the times soon drop away.

Yeah i follow what you are on about, but in that respect its much the same as a 1990's 400's with no more than 83rwhp, putting in lap times quicker than 2007 600cc bikes that are running anywhere up to around 130 at the wheel.
There is no doubt that the YPM series has suddenly become slightly more serious in terms of people throwing cash at the bikes and tuning but then again the standard of riding from them with times like that is equally as impressive as the standard of machine that is out there too :)

i watched the gsxr cup races on saturday at brands... jeez! a couple of those blokes really stood out from the rest. 49's/50's on stock gsxr600's with road tyres...
the guy who won both races, i think he qual'd 7th. In race 1, he got the hole shot and pulled a good gap, red flagged 2 laps later... restart and he did the same, another red flag and another restart and he did the same again! i didnt catch his name but he was at another level.

i think its safe to say that there is overlap amongst all the classes with the other classes. I'm sure there would have been some 600's out there struggling to go quicker than 1'18.

There was a geezer yesterday in the Rookie 600's taking the mickey completely at Snett averaging 1.14's on a GSXR600, stand up wheelies from Russels across the line, some real clever racing too as he got rid of the chasing pack, hints of the Bob Collins about him to be honest but just looked like a complete package on a bike :)
A Chelmsford lad too :)
Josh Wainwright admittedly ran away with a couple of the races, but to take the lap record on the 400 in the style he did was showing that he is indeed in need of something for the future, got the weight and the ability to make a good top flight racer i reckon.
But yes there is a definite overlap, which isnt a bad thing because i could see it getting pretty messy with 30 bikes all running the same sort of lap times, exciting from a spectators point of view, scary from a riders one :D :D

belly pan scuffs are the way forward
No not really, as unlike the ZXR400 belly pan (which grounds at the same time as the pegs anyway) that belly pan doesn't push up out of the way so on a proper lap time the rear wheels going to come of the ground so the way forward is to sort the suspension, move things up and hang of it even more chimpanzee style.
Any muppet can ground the belly pan and pipes on a sh#t handling bus with no ground clearance. The idea is to keep things off the ground and get it up the front where it should be not leave a trail of yellow plastic everywhere.;)
