View Full Version : Valid email addresses
All,
Every now and again I ban certain user accounts for not having a valid email address. This is usually where people change their ISP and forget to update their profile on the forum - if it ever happens to you, you will see a message when you go to log in saying you have been banned for not having a valid email address and to contact bossman AT essexbikers.co.uk with a valid one.
Once you do that, I'll update your profile (or do it yourself if you can... i dont know if thats possible when you have been banned?) and the ban will be lifted.
This has to be done - if you could only see the amount of bounced back mails it causes me!
Just remember, dont get the hump - you havent ****ed me or anyone off, you just need to have a valid email address in your profile at all times otherwise I get all the boucebacks when people reply to your threads/send you PM's.
</rant> ;)
Thanks,
Dan.

Didn't work for me Dan. Yes I did get a bit humpy. Sorry.
Previous was WebTone.
Just a thought here...isn't there an option to allow the user to change to a new email addy then reverify with a confirmation email? I am aware that the email I have used for this account is going to expire when you next do a verification as I have changed ISPs again recently.
Cheers

Just a suggestion to all who are having problems with this. ....Rather than using an ISP specific email address, which will become invalid if you change ISP's, why not use a generic email address, such as hotmail, or googlemail, that way if you change ISP your registered email address can move with you. (By the way, no one says you have to read this email, Dan just gets fed up with invalid address's)

There sure is - You can change your email address in your profile whenever you want, and the site sends you a verification email to make sure its calid.
As for people getting the hump, thats the main reason I posted this thread as quite a few people have got annoyed when i've suspended their account. Anyone that knows me will tell you that I am no power freak, I run and maintain this site because I can due to what I do for a living, it's not so I can play god.
For those of you who dont know, the site sends you an email (if you have the options enabled in your profile) whenever someone replies in a thread you are watching, sends you a PM or if somethings coming up in the calender. That mail comes from bossman AT essexbikers.co.uk (me) so when it bounces, it ends up in my mailbox.
Imagine 5,10,50..100 users all with invaild email addresses.... everyone replying to their threads, sending them PM's, and every time I get another bounceback email.
I dont do a scan for invalid emails, I just ban (SUSPEND) user accounts as and when their email addresses start bouncing messages.
Any suggestions welcomed ;)
Dan.

Is there not an option in your admin panel for the boards that would stop this ?
I have done php sites for years and never had this problem. Is a user has an incorrect email, it just means they recieve no notifications and also they wouldn't be able to retrieve their lost password if required.
Is it a vBulletin thing Dan or have you configed something wrong ?
