I have my new Pilot power 2CT fitted on my R1, l like to scrub it and set it up. But l am worried about riding a new unscrubed tyre on cold tarmac. I dont wanna damage me bike. Any advice of the subject?

I use sandpaper to get rid of the shiny gloss, and then take it easy for a while!

Firstly the scrubbing in off tyres is to get rid of the releasing agent from the surface of the tyre, this can be done quite easily by spraying the tread with brake cleaner, it has no bad effect on the tyre and even then its not that necessary.

Just get on the bike, take it easy with the throttle when rolling on out of corners and gradually and progressively increase your lean angle, again be progressive with the throttle too.

It shouldnt take more than 20 miles on decent roads to do it, i pretty much do it on the way home from the tyre fitters and try to get edge to edge before getting home :D

The first set of 2CT's i got fitted over at Harold Wood, i had heard all the rave about them prior to buying them so i wandered over there with my first RSV, got the obligatory warning about scrubbing them in, turned out of the garage immediately onto the A12 and nailed it from a standing start all the way through to 3rd gear, not a twitch :D :D

(obviously not the way to do it but what the hell i wanted to see what all the fuss was about :D )

The next day with only 25 miles on them, they went to Burnham and back and had the crap caned out of them by both me and Juliets dad :D

i've just had a new BT014 on mine (last Friday when the roads were like butter  - put my foot down at traffic lights and nearly fell off, Sidi Vertigo's are not particularly grippy in the wet!)

i just took it easy as Lateshift says....haven't done the edge to edge bit on the way back from Parky's though, it's only 3 miles.

did 300 miles on the motorway on them on Monday so no doubt they'll be squaring off nicely

Lateshift if you hadn't mentioned you reckoned it would soon be time for a new tyre the other week, i don't reckon i would have needed one :grin2

Kiss of death you see :D :D

You not thought about trying a different tyre on that GSXR Harrie? i have read quite a few reports recently of people complaining that the 014's square off far too quickly.

If it starts squaring off quickly try running 1psi higher, given your weight it shouldnt make too much of a difference unless of course the handling feels all wrong, but for straight line journies it wont hurt it too much and should give at least another 500 miles ;)

thanks, i'll give that a whirl. like you say it can't hurt.

i had thought about something different, but was going to hang on until i needed a new front as well. i'm thinking about the hallowed 2CTs y'see.....:love3

They do seem to be quite a hard wearing tyre (yeah yeah i love em to bits but its a case of better the devil you know i suppose) i have heard good things about the Dunlop Qualifies being equally as good and also the Diablo Corsa III too :)

That being said if you do lots of mileage on them as you normally do it might be just aswell going over to a sticky sports touring tyre, i am betting these days unless it was on the track most of us couldnt notice the difference, you only have to look at how BT020's handle on road and track to see that now :D

i thought about them too but as you know summer IS coming (it's true!) and i want to ride the bike a bit more spiritedly in the summer.....

i'm loving the bike to bits and while i won't ever make full use of it on the roads (or on the track for that matter) it would be nice to have some sporty tyres in the hot weather....

Well you won't go far wrong with 2CT's then, they are hard to beat for mileage and grip in wet and dry really :)

My rear has done 3000 now and looks like its good for more too, i did 160 miles on it the other day and really give it some aswell and i cant believe how well they are lasting again :D

:D

increase that lean angle....i tried that on the way to work the other day and the roads being as gay as they are (covered in loose rock salt, wet and probably a tad icy too) the bike decided it didnt like it and proceeded to let me know with the most almighty twitch on more than one occasion i might add......i certainly had a warming sensation in the seat of my pants!!!

i'll leave it till the roads dry out a bit before getting over to me edges!

I dont doubt it in this weather Shane, i didnt mind playing when i found roads that hadnt been ruined by that crap they put on it to make you think there is going to be an impending ice age coming in :D

I had the back stepping out quite a few times on some roads i found up around the Harwich area the other day but for the most part it was all good, plenty of out of the seat action (along with brown trouser moments because i didnt know the roads :D :D )

i know....the only chance ive had to ride the bike so far is to and from work so its dead early/late so the roads are awful......especially when i get into Grays....lots of lorries and vans which means lots of diesel...you can smell it sometimes before youve even got to the orssett cock roundabout!!

i'm gonna get out a bit more durring the day on me days off, give it a bit of time to dry out and what not!!!

I honestly wouldnt have a clue, i had a bit of mad one the other morning and just got geared up and went and ragged the bike, ended up seeing signs telling me i was close to Harwich, rode back through Maldon and Billericay and god knows where else, got home, got some warmer gear on (as i only had my summer kit on :D ) and then went back over to Burnham for another hour or two :D

In truth it was probably more than 160 miles as i did a tank and a half just blindly taking in the scenery and trying my best to stop the back wheel from spinning and the front from rising :D

But there were plenty of bumpy roads thats for sure (one of them i had never seen so many bits of bodged tarmac and potholes :D )
