Right here's what's happened so far:

1999 Virago XV125. I replaced the exhaust due to a big ufckin hole in the old one. Also replaced exhaust gaskets. Bike ran fine with no problems until Wednesday, when I ran out of petrol at 3:30 am on the road between the A12 and stock. Luckily, a bloke in a car pulled over and (again - luckily) had a hose in his car and siphoned some fuel into my bike. Managed to get to work and subsequently filled up with fuel.

However - since this happened the bike seems to have no power. I get to 1500-2000 revs in 2nd (a guess - the bike has no rev counter) and the bike will not continue to build speed / power and feels like it is hopping or pulsing.

I took both spark plugs out and adjusted the gaps to be sure.

Still have the problem.

Anyone got any idea's on what may be the problem? I hope it's something stupid and cheap to repair 'cos this bike has done my head in from the start and it's going on Ebay - once I get it sorted.

Thanks in advance

Darrell

im not too hot on my mechanics, i just kinda figure stuff out based on logic and good guess work.

If it ran totaly dry is there any possibility you have some kinda air lock in the carb? (someone my be able to tell me if im talking complete toilet.....its just an idea)

the only other thing maybe is that the petrol from the dudes car couldve been contaminated or had some kinda aditive in it that your bike doesnt like, and theres some left behind.......erm, or maybe where the tanks been empty and its been cold, condensation is in there and its diluting the petrol.........like i said, i have no mechanical knowledge, this is all guess work!!

Thankyou for your random ramblings Captain :)

The most likely cause of your problem Chromium05 is that by emptying the tank completely, you have dragged all the dreggs out of the bottom of your tank into your carburettor/s and therefore bunged up a jet.

The carbs need to come off and be stripped jets cleaned out (compressed air is best DO NOT poke anything like wire in your jets). All put back together and tested.

There are 2 major jets in most carbs, an idle jet and a main jet, if you block an idle jet it won't tickover properly, if you block a main jet it won't run over about a quarter throttle and a few thousand revs......guess which you have blocked?

I understand your frustration, but you can't blame this one on the bike, blame this one on the nut behind the handlebars ;)

Music.

I did a few tracks with/for him (He is writing for one at the mo' which should be wikkid - full orchestra!!!) and mastered his "Rhapsody" album. In fact - you picked him up from my house on Mount View in Billericay when I was mastering that - sure you had a blue and white gixxer then.

He has developed so much over the 4 years I have known him that he pretty much blows all the other essex mc's away.

Just a shame that he isn't in london - people might take more notice of him and he'd get the props he deserves.

Ha ha..erm..bugger!:o Can't I just kick it?

Thanks for that - at least I have an idea of what to be looking at doing.

Right. I managed to DL a factory service manual so I guess I'll be out in the cold tomorrow taking bits off the bike.

Unless someone nicks it and the insurance pays out ( to any coppers reading that - I am jesting (sort of))

yeah i just had a quick butchers at your page...found the link through your profile details on here.......i like it!!

its weird, coz when G first got into all this hip hop business it was all that American popular rubbish....Wu Tan and all that....although i did quite like Common!!

The rest i have no idea....it just kinda happened! im dead proud!!!

We (me and me folks) always used to bang on at him to do something with his english coz he was really good at creative writting right from the get go, but he was always fobbing it off.......i think this is the perfect outlet for him.............i really hope he does well from it, gets big and all that, but that being said, i dont think he'd get to make such gritty stuff if he got a bit mainstream, like that Plan B fella....its all gotta be radio freindly these days..he'd hate that!!

Do you want to sell me your old down pipe?

My xv125 did that a few months after having strights put in it, what do the plugs look like?

My guess if they loot black and ****ty, if so the bikes running rich.

How about £20 is there are no holes in it, Thjey are £30 new but on back order.

If the plugs are ok check your air filter an manifold.

Change both plugs again, I reckon your running on one one cylinder, are you getting fumes from both exhausts?
If you rev the bike when it's warmed up does it backfire or do flames come from the exhaust?

Another thought, follow the throttle cable down under the tank, there is a thread where the cable leave's the cover, make sure the bolt has not come off the thread and is restricting it.

No holes in the downpipe - it's very clean. £20 is OK.

Plugs look fine but I'll pick some up and change them. Fumes and output from both exhausts. No backfiring and no flames.

Will check throttle cable shortly.

Cheers

Have you put aftermarket air filter covers on it?

Some, like tec glides won't fit.

Cool sold, are you in a rush to get rid of it or will next time we are both at the white hart be ok?

I definitely want it.

No rush on the exhaust - it's not offered anywhere else.
I work next door to the white hart so I'll leave it with Kev in case I'm not around wednesdays. Just leave the cash with him and drop me a PM and I'll pick it up from him.

Bike seems to be working alright now. Saying that - I only took it round the block but no probs. I'll see how it really is when I go to work tomorrow.

I think it may have been the gaps on the plugs being to big. Would that cause these problems?

Ok cool, I'l let you know next time I'm going down there as I don't go very often.

The plugs shouldn't be to much of a problem if they are coming out clean I would have thought, Are you fitting the plugs that it tells you in the book or normal cr6hs?

I have the cr6hs in mine and they hav'nt been a problem, although i'm going through quite a few of them it's the bike running rich, it's not the plugs, just that these are more available.

Hopefully it will be ok now.:)

NGK cr6 hsa in the bike.

I guess running the tank dry could have got air into the works? Either way - it seems to be ok now.

cheers

Changed both plugs again. The bike is still playing up. Cut out 3 times between billericay and galleywood yesterday. If I leave it a few minutes it MIGHT start - the starter turns over but doesn't ignite. When it does I have to start it on full choke but as soon as I add any throttle it dies again.

I have just noticed that the bottom pipe of the 2 (to the front cylider) is blowing a bit of smoke and the top is running fine. The front cylinder sounds a bit rattley too.

Please don't tell me I have to worry about this too......

The bike is currently on Ebay but I don't want to sell a shafted bike.
