Hi All,

Just thought I'd share this this you.

Some of you may know that I'm currently building two ZXR400 H2's one as a toy for the road and the other as a track bike.

Anyway I am building the road bike first and have had several parts with a powder coater since Christmas Eve.

Wednesday I popped in to see him and he said it should all be finished either later that week or early this. As of Thursday I still hadn't heard anything so I sent him an email asking when would be convenient to collect the parts. This is the reply I received this morning,

Hi Darren

Come early today been trying to keep everyone happy the previous two weeks been working two shifts to keep up, 6am until 4pm then delivering until 6pm grabbing a bite to eat and retuning until 10pm. The cold I had the last few days has turned into a chest infection got some pills from the doctor to shake it off as quickly as possible. I have been up all night coughing then trying to do a days work this has become too hard. I am way behind with the corporate customers as well as public work will need to ask you to wait until I get a chance. If you cannot wait any longer I will understand if you need to remove the parts for a faster service else where. I do remember the conversation about the plastics can’t see any way of putting in more hours. Your parts will stop everything dead as they are not a quick job to do if you want to achieve a nice job. They will probably be the last motor cycle parts I will take on I had to quit the polishing for good last summer for the same reasons.

The last eight years I have been quiet from Christmas until Easter I had no indication that this year would be any different and I had no trouble servicing the motor bike bits during theses times, it also worked out well for the customers too because this was the time their bikes were off the road, unfortunately this has not happened this year I have been hit hard with work right from the first day of January also some of my corporate customers are way overdue with their accounts and are using this to push in front of everyone else if I upset them I will have to close my doors its taken years to win them and I only wish I new how hard it was going to be to get paid in a reasonable time. The work volume is too much for one person and I am very grateful to have it. I need to find some help it’s been enjoyable watching my business grow but the present situation is far from it.

I’m never too sick to work the last time I visited a doctor was in 1998 so I was today just proves it happens to us all and at the worst possible time.

Speak to you soon

Many Thanks

John

It was the frame etc powder coating. I have now found someone else to do the job. ;)

What pi55ed me off the most is he was still saying it would be ok last week. I have had the engine and front end finished and sitting in my garage waiting to be fitted for ages.

Why can't people just be honest and say sorry mate but I just can't do it. Even this morning when I picked the parts up he still never appologised for messing me around for the last six weeks.

i know what you mean!!

Fair enough a load of unexpected work has come in, but to tell you yours is still gonna be done, and then to bail...that sucks!!!

at least you got a contingency sorted and it's getting done!!!

I loved that email he sent you..
Fair enough, he's makin an excuse why he can't do the work for you, but come on.... do we really need to know when he last visited his doctor...
i was waitin for his mother-in-law to creep in somewhere......

Don't know if he's a mate of yours..... just seems a bit un-proffesional to me.....

This is my point it's just a list of excuses and to be honest I don't care! I'm a paying customer and all I wanted was the job done.

Anyway the point of posting it here was so noone else ends up dissapointed.

This new guy I have found to do the job seems like a nice guy and has some good facillities. Fingers crossed it should be ok. I'll let you know in due course.

Unfortunately, you may be a paying customer, but you are not paying as much as others, so you drop down the priorities list.

I have a similar situation, I have ordered a made to measure pine cabinet for my dining room. I asked the guy how long he wanted to make a cabinet, he said 3-4 weeks. So as this was fitting in around decorating the room, I left it until 4 weeks before I wanted it, then ordered, it was due for delivery 8/12/2006, and to cut a long story short, I still don't have it. Short of asking for my deposit back I am running short on ideas, but I don't want to do that as I want the cabinet. Last time we spoke to him 2 weeks ago, I was assured it was built and it had gone to be finished, (waxed) then it would be delivered on tuesday or wednesday, but he would phone to let us know which day on monday......no call! we have left 5 phone messages, no response!

I am struggling to work out whether he is just a very poor business man or whether he is trying to rip me off for my £50 deposit.

I agree Rich, the problem is the big contracts as anyone will tell you never make a lot of money as your prices have to be keen to get the business. Therefore it's the private customer where the bottom line profits are made. But untill these business realisie this they just muddle on until they run out of money. Because all their money is tied up in materials and the big compaines will pay you when they feel like it, because they can, if you don't like it they will soon find someone else to replace you That's the shortsightedness of small business today there all chasing the big deal! And the private customer comes second best.

As for your cabinet man. When you get hold of him get you deposit back and tell him to poke it. If you just accept it they will continue to think this acceptable behaviour :shooter

But where do I get another one made to measure, for a specific task, at the same price?

I know what you mean, I'm having to pay twice what I was originally quoted but hopefully the job will get done this time.
