View Full Version : Oxford Oximiser
I've just bought myself an Oxford Oximiser and have charged the battery up on the Gixer, now do I leave it plugged in or do I take it off charge.
(Dawn has said that I should take it off charge, I think its got something to do the fact that leaving it on charge will cost money and she could spend it on ARCHERS :laugh1 :grin2 )
I would have thought that it would be better to leave it on charge, but I have read the instructions (and yes I can read) and it doesn't saying anything about leaving it plugged in, just goes on about the charge lights and what the colours mean.

Aren't they just the later version of the optimate? In which case you can leave therm on all the time as they're designed to sense batttery condition and charge accordingly, so once the battery is charged it just adds a top up if and when the battery needs it.
On the race bike batteries we just leave acouple of Optimates plugged in all the time otherwise they're US by next season.

If you have an oximiser then it will constantly trickle charge your battery, which I am told is not good, its like filling up a bean bag and when its full trying to put more in. So probably best not ot leave it on charge all the time.
I am told batteries like a pulse charge whatever that is?
If you have the oxford MAXIMISER, that delivers a charge until the battery is full and then it monitors the battery, every so often it checks the level of the battery and if it had fallen then it will give i a charge until it is full again. This is similar to how the optimate works and both are ok to leave on charge.

This is a bit of a mixed opinion to be honest, trickle charging, optimising, charging etc etc is all dependant on the type that you are using and is normally battery dependant.
Believe it or not a battery works best when its used for a certain period at a certain discharge rate and then charged again at a certain rate, to get the right conditioning.
There is nothing at all wrong with trickle charging in comparison to sticking a battery on a charger that might have the wrong charge rate for the battery ;)
Most battery manufacturers will tell you that the best way to keep a battery in tip top conditon is to use it and run it down before charging it back up at a set rate, its called conditioned charging and this is what battery conditioners and optmisers are supposed to do in theory.
he says in theory :D, unfortunately not all batteries unless they are made in exactly the same way charge at the same rate, nor do they discharge at the same rate either, an optimiser can only attempt to condition the battery for normal use so really it should be called a maintainer (which is what they used to be ;) ).

The ozimisers are not chargers. They are battery conditioners and designed to be left switched on all the time. All they do is kick in as required to keep the battery in a usable condition.
I always leave mine on over the winter period ....... have done for years and always will. The worse thing in the world for making a battery flat is not the time it isn't used for, but where it is when not used and the temperature where it is left. The worse thing to kill a battery is the cold which is why many cars die in the winter months because they normally have a battery with a dead cell which can cope in the summer but drain the other cells to cope when it gets cold.
As for the archers ...... You would have to leave it switched off for about 12 months to save enough to buy a double in the pub.
Thanks for all the info people much appreciated :clap
