Im lookin to get a tracker fitted to my bike. Im thinking this is goin to be better than alarm imob cause atleast if my bike gets stolen and put in the back of a van i might have some chance of seeing it again.
If any one can recommend a place to where i could get this fitted that would be great :jumping2

Another option is to buy a cheap pay as you go mobile, hide it on the bike (maybe even get someone whos good with sparx to wire it up for power from the bike) then register with a site like this one (http://www.followus.co.uk/homeusers.html).

Clever idea but an easy one to foil. Bike thieves tend to try to get to the power supply to kill of alarms etc, they would find the phone easily and disconnect it ( switch it off or take the sim out). Also, if you do not make a call with your phone for a period os around 3 months, most mobile phone companies would realocate the number to someone else. The tracker is hidden better inside the bike, so that it is hard to detect by prying under the seat. It is more expensive but certainly a more robust solution. I have it on my car (It was fitted by the car dealer), l would seriously consider putting it on my bike also. Hence, l am curious too.

Trackers are a great idea in theory Becky but there are some things to consider. The percentage of bikes stolen are actually broken parts or are shipped abroad. Professional thieves can locate a tracker on a bike pretty swiftly with a digital receiver to pick up the either theout going signal or if it hasnt been activated the 'charge' that the system emits through its own power supply. You dont have to be a rocket scientist to know that on certain machines there are only a few limited places a tracker unit can be fixed.
Trackers are more effective fitted to larger motor vehicles. The Police and tracking agency (to whom you may have to pay a subscription fee to in 'many' cases to monitor your bike) need to be informed very swiftly of the theft to activate the unit and track its location.
Sadly the figures for recovered bikes are not that high, even though the sellers of such products will try and convince you otherwise. I think they are an excellent idea but really need to be coupled with another system such as what Doodle has suggested so you know almost immediately when your bike has been 'lifted'.
It will make a difference to your premiums and is also a great deterent but it may be a costly exercise if you cant find the right sort of retailer to give ou the best deal.:grin2 :grin2

Personally, I wouldnt waste my time or effort on one. Datatool do a very effective system that sends a text to your mobile when its tampered with or when there is an activation:clap . Its Thatcham approved (hence lowering your insurance premium) :reading can be connected as an upgrade to almost all existing Datatool systems and can be fitted fairly quickly by any approved retailer.:grin2

I am not sure that is correct, you will not know immediately when ur bike is being lifted since the phone cannot call u on its own. However, if you have one of those alarms coupled to the mobile phone network, that would certainly alert u the very moment ur bike is being tempered with. If the phone number of the sim in the Alarm is known, registering it on the 'Followus.co.uk' site will allow you to pin point exactly where your bike is. Be it in a van in motion or someones garage.
That said, MickyGixer is perfectly right when she says that trackers have very limited effectiveness on a bike, since you have to know almost immediately after ur bike has been taken to alert the authorities immediately also, and for them to activate ttracker b4 the thieves locate the tracker devices and remove them.
The phone enabled alarm is looking like a more effective solution at the mo.

I do believe I mentioned that in my first post - but I appreciate I may have confused it a tad when I quoted Doodle, the Datatool system does notify you by text as soon as it is tampered with or an activation is made. By tampering I mean the warning that a bike emits prior to full alarm activation....:grin2 :grin2 :grin2 :grin2

Datatool Snitcher as mentioned, trackers are all well and good but you have to know the bike has been nicked to start with really, with the snitcher it will text your phone.
However it comes at a cost of around £200 as an add on to the Datatool System 4 alarm as i recall and even then there is a charge for the service too i think :)
If my bike was nicked, i wouldnt want it back :)
