i agree but thats cos when we left burnham the leaders bolted off like they were on a track day & didnt pull over once to let the ones that got stuck behind sunday drivers catch up. quite a few didn't know the route you were all taking & some aren't as quick as others.
me & shorty didn't have a clue where you all went!

Drop off system required in future me thinks. If a leader can be agreed upon, and a back marker, at every junction the person behind the leader stops and marks the junction until the back marker arrives, at which point they are then free to zoom as quickly as they like back to the front of the group. That way nobody ever gets lost. You just have to agree to never overtake the lead rider or chaos ensues.

Lo and behold, i've found it.
Here's a few...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v285/essexbikers/bik006.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v285/essexbikers/bik007.jpg
Who has a funny caption for this one? http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v285/essexbikers/bik004.jpg
different people do rideouts differently and i think that was one of the problems today
and i think the site can learn from it
the way i've run rideouts in the past (mcnninjas) is that the leader leads...
then at a change of direction no.2 in the group stops at the junction as a marker and counts the other riders through and rejoins at the back, so there is a new no.2 for the next junction (everyone needs to know the number of riders in the group and how to count)
everyone should have the leaders phone number... so if they are waiting at a junction and someone doesn't turn up they can call the leader (who has phone in pocket on vibrate) and will stop the group
you should always have sight of the person behind you.. (which today i did)... if you lose sight of the person behind you.. you should slow down until you can see them (this will naturally slow the whole group down, as each rider will slow down as they lose sight of the person behind them)
as no.2s weren't stopping (as i hadn't mentioned it..doh..), the whole group were stopping at marker junctions today, i only continued when i got the nod from behind...(i must of mis-counted)
if you come to a junction and there is no one marking it... go straight on
from burnham to maldon there are really only 4-5 junctions that require marking by a no.2 on the route we took today (which is why its a good route... allows people to go at their own pace to a degree... even better if everyone knows the route)
i assume you and shorty turned off early and headed through maldon instead of round maldon...? which way did you end up going ..?
another popular system is the leader, riders, tailender system (the vd system http://www.visordown.com/forums/showthread.php?t=23731 ... good system if someone who knows the route and wants to stay at the back all day...(also posted by DoodleBug))
vd is a better system if people want to ride at their own pace
i think essexbikers needs to develop a rideout system and make sure everyone is aware of it. for the number of riders in the group today a system was needed..
(or even splitting into two groups.. not possible as routes weren't known)
certainly it highlights that routes should be planned before the rideout and a map of the route posted for all, so those that don't know the route can print it out (routes shouldn't be decided on the day..perhaps..?)
these issues will only increase as the groups grow in size, and the rideouts get longer and quicker (rye, boxhill, buryhill etc)
smaller groups will never have these issues... (so splitting larger groups into two is always another option)
all in all an enjoyable first ride for 2007
apologies if pace was a little hi4some ... first ride of the year and all that...
(although the pace was no quicker than the essexbikers rideout i was on last year... just we had more people today)
...the riding season is almost fully here :)
ps evil twin.. the lead is where you left it ;)

yep it was the ninja's fault, we had a nice ride through the finchingfield lanes though! apart from the old boy telling us to slow down.........even though my speedo said 29 at the time! dont quite know what planet he was on.

We should get that old boy out with us. We could let him to lead, then that way maybe everyone will be able to keep up.
