View Full Version : PLEASE READ: Bot Warning
I know we had a post we were saying about Bots, well if you go to the joker section, two of them have obviously got onto the forums and managed to post.:shooter
This is not a joke, please do not click the links these bots provide, treat them like junk emails, my fathers email and ebay account has already been hacked this week from the kind of sh!te that these bots put onto your computer.:shooter This has now resulted in two ebay items (Sonofabikers ER-5 & Toyota) being cancelled by ebay due to the unauthorised password & detail changes..
Just giving you guys the headsup, lateshift/tark/dan/whoeverissposedtosortthisstuffout id advise going through the members list with a fine tooth comb as theres probably a few dormant bots residing in there atm.:angrypun
Anyway, just thought id let you guys know.

Tooey thanks for the warning, however if you know anything about Bots you will realise that they are on here constantly, not hiding at all :D
who do you think is posting all the spam ;)
I warned people ages ago of the potential problem of both clicking links and also displaying their email address in anywhere other than the rideouts section ;)
There are two types of bot, one posts spam, one farms email addresses.
Clicking the links purely gives you spyware to clear up or a trojan virus in the worst case scenario :)
This is a common phenomena on the web at the moment unfortunately and the only real way to combat it is to either lock down the forums and manually acknowledge/filter each registration (not such a bad thing but time consuming) or implement the type of security check such as the text embedded within an image that you have to physically read and enter.
However it wont stop everything, the only thing that stops your identity being robbed on the internet is common sense ;)

You said bot <titter>
The pics of miss Cruise were quite nice though :grin2
There's not much that can be done about bots, they sign up like the rest of us and normally use a shared isp, the only way around it is that the first few posts from a new members are on preview until a mod authorises them for public display, but then that's only possible if the software is available for the bbs.
Mick do you check mail before work in the morning? If so I will email you any offending links that crop up during the night.

I normally check as soon as i get to work to be honest and then once at work every hour or so, the problem is that i am out the door by 7.30am at the latest and dont turn my PC on so i wouldnt get any mail at all telling me about it until i got home as it cant be diverted to the Military network :(
I have managed to drop them as soon as they post recently but the odd one does slip through, i can only ask for people to make sure that they dont bother replying and they dont dare click any of the links :D
Failing that (not too sure if this will actually work as it goes) we could lock the joker section seeing as thats where they all go to post the crap, the only concern there would be that they just naturally end up in other parts of the forum anyway, at least they seem to be containing themselves to there :)

Im sure they were... came complete with the trojan package too!! ;)
And yes lateshift i know all about bots having moderated a forum myself for a gaming site, pain in the a$$ things to try to keep track of especially those that look like a normal user in our case it was something like Matt999 or something...:laugh2
In the end we managed to get past the problem by using the 'image verification' and actually manually going through each application for a little while..:grin1 Until Another bit of kit came up to verify each application..(i cant remember now what it was, the site owner installed it)
But Hey if it keeps the forum safe im all for it:clap

Why not make more forums subscription like ride outs ?
Or do what I do on my 2 sites and alter your categories so the top one is public for latest news, announcements, website enquiries etc then subscribe all the others ?
Not sure why you get so many on here because I don't get any on my sites and I don't run anything super secure. Mind you, one site is purely members only. There is no registration availble. It has to be done through a paid subscription.
Only if you were stupid enough to click the link ;)
But if you saw the pictures then you must of clicked the link...:laugh2
I dont think that idea would work to be fair fezby, for pure reason that Dan is a very busy man and it would take a long time to grant EVERYONE permission to post.:grin1
