yup you are being "numptyish" :D
The only licence you need for most trackdays is a full "unrestricted" bike licence, however on some circuits they do actually allow restricted licences too.
The other licence you are reading about is the ACU (racing) licence, if you have one of them then you dont need a road licence.
Going on a track wont necessarily teach you to go faster though but it will help you to become a smoother rider, mainly down to confidence in the track surface, then the bike (learning what its actually capable of) and then also yourself (learning what you can and cant get away with).

Every one does mate. Dont be in too much of a rush to be competition for the MotoGP boys. One look at my sig pic will explain why. ;)

My honest opinion here (and some will disagree) is that the Ron Haslam school for what you get is no longer competitively priced (we have the DVD of it and whilst it sounds attractive going there it really didnt look like you get anymore than you are able to get at any trackday now).
By that i mean, if you book onto a trackday with your own bike, you get to learn to ride your own bike, you ask an instructor for help and hey presto, you have paid a third less and are still getting the same instruction as if you were getting it from Ron Haslam himself ;)
Riding is riding until you get to the point where you are progressing to racing, which for me is where proper coaching is then needed (if you arent brimming with obvious talent that is).
California Superbike School is a better option, its a full day, you cant put yourself in a group that "you" think you are qualified for without first having qualified to go in there, more importantly you ride your own bike and learn at school pace rather than just getting on the bike and ragging the tits out of it (that means you concentrate first on the lessons in cornering).
If you are safe enough to ride on the road there is no reason why you should be put off by going on a trackday first, fine you might still want to go and do one of the school courses but as far as basic instruction goes you will have that opportunity at any trackday.
The most important thing about taking the step and getting on one, is to make sure that you dont get on there and instantly think you are going to be Rossi, dont instantly think you are quick enough to be in the next group up, and go into it with the expectation of enjoying it :)
Get a couple under your belt, try to understand and identify faults within your riding (if there are any) and then as i said take that to a school course where you actually understand from their instruction why you are making errors, but more importantly get the proper instruction on how to correct them :)

Well i am sure that once the weather grips properly that there will be a few being organised however a few are already looking at booking them, me and Jetski are doing Brands GP circuit on 26th March, however that was a sort of impromptu booking as we need to get her bike put together and tested after its had some work done to it :)
Normally Jetski dives straight in and starts looking at trackdays that people may be interested in however we have a few other things going on this year that to us are slightly more important, but thats not to say she wont be organising some.
If you want to keep the costs down, then try looking at the ones run by Hottrax, Focused Events and also No Limits and look for ones that are taking place in the week (not evening ones because you tend to find the die hard "lets finish work and go and act like nutcases" tend to crowd them ones in all the groups), the ones during the week are cheaper for obvious reasons and suit people that still want their weekend to do other stuff :)
Tracks you want to be looking at are probably Brands (dont be scared of it) Rockingham International or the National, Silverstone (nice wide track), Lydden (small course but the corners are enough to get you working) and even Mallory (i am not sure i would do that as a first trackday though if you arent a fully confident road rider but then thats my opinion due to Gerards being an extremely fast corner and also Shaws and the Bus Stop being very daunting).
If you have any dates of trackdays in mind that you look at and fancy doing then by all means dont be afraid to advertise them on here, it may well be that someone will come down aswell and at least give you some company :)
