Yep, its that time again when shorty needs as much help as possible in getting the beast back on the road!
Basically, i was riding home last Monday nite when all i could smell was burnt rubber/oil. i thort to myself S*** better not be me! the smell stuck with me for ages, thats when i realized it was me! so i slowed down and tried my hardest not to actually use the bike to get home (hard with all the hills) But despite this the inevitable happened and the bike starting to over heat and seize!!!! made it home, the bike was Extremely hot! appears my bodged gen cover has bin leaking oil for sometime and it ran dry!!!!!!
Put oil in the bike in the morning thanks to abit of advice from lateshift, but the bike runs crap with a sound of metal against metal clicking! grrrrr cant ride it and not only that but seems cos it got very very hot, the plugs expanded and 1 snapped in the bike!
ANY light on the situation as to what to do next would be much appreciated. :(:(:(:(:(:(

In short, if you knew the cover was dodgy, why have you not kept an eye on the level? and once you knew you were in trouble why didn't you stop? .....you may have avoided all the damage.
Either get an engine off ebay and swap it, (which is quite possibly your best option) or take the engine out, and strip it all down, carefully noting how it goes together, the damage could be bad under the circumstances, at the least I would think you would be looking at bottom end damage such as main bearings and big ends, it could be worse and include gearbox and it could include top end valve gear damage, not to mention bores and pistons.
How is the ZX6R looking?

well tbh rich, i wish i had stopped! and the gen cover has lasted a good 3-4months! oil level was fine sunday morning (checked beofre the ride we went on!) still doesnt excuse it! as for the engine swap, i wudnt know how to do it so wud have to put it in a garage for that (mick? how much roughly?) was actually thinking of getting another srad, keeping my one as a project hahahaha and p/x the ninja!
Ah the ninja! its fooked! needs alot of work tbh, still not too sure if the frames bent. also the gears need tweeking and i cud go on forever! looking into getting her fixed to p/x if worth it at all!

I thought you had got past this fear of touching anything?
Its easy, remove fairing tank etc, remove radiator and water pipes, disconnect any cables, unbolt engine and drop it out.
Fitting is reversal of removal as they say in all the good manuals.
A pair of stands and a small jack will help.

reading manual now :D lol i have got past the fear! just i dont think its wise for me to do so as im likely to do more damage! i might give it a go ;)
Cheers rich

an engine swap isnt anywhere near as bad as it sounds. me and a friend had to do a srad 750 swap as he did exactly the same (no oil in 27k engine = ****ed crank amongst other things). It was alot easier and cheaper to pick up a replacement low milage (15k) engine £200 - £400 and swap it over rather than have the old engine fixed £600+
If you have had enough of it and want to sell up, let me know i know someone who could be interested.

An engine swap on one of these shouldnt take more than 2 hours to remove everything, drop the old engine out, and hoy a new one in ;)
No point in stripping the engine you have as a beginner mechanic, it will undoubtedly have caused main bearing damage and very likely with the heat some damage to the head (not to mention the pistons).
Sling another engine in, register the engine to the bike with DVLA and get back out there :)

Trouty's race team swapped a GSXR engine at the track whilst I was there with them last season.

No, I don't suggest you try and do it quick, but I think you can do it. Just be methodical and note where all bolts and stuf go.

and the season before (at the same track) we trashed a gsxr engine in qualifying, borrowed an R6 and qualified that instead, trashed the gearbox at the start of the 3rd hour. borrowed a spare r6 engine and got out in time for the last 2 hours of the race :) (was an 8 hour race mind)
