hello,
can anyone give me some advise on a trials bike please? I am a proud SV650 owner but quite fancy having some off-road fun. My partner also wants a trials bike for day to day use and I want to use it for the weekends off the beaten track. I havent a clue about what type i should go for. i have been advised i cant go wrong with a KTM but need another opinion. I am after a 125cc bike as the misses hasnt done test yet, can anyone give me some tips advice please.
cheers

I don't wish to sound negative, but I don't think you want a Trials bike at all, I think what you are after is an Enduro or a Motorcross
This is a trials bike

and this is what its used for

This is an Enduro Bike

Basically the trials, is a very lightweight bike with a very compact frame, used for getting over obstacles, very often at very slow speed, bouncing from place to place on the back wheel etc. It is not design to sit down, and has no seat or just a little padding on the frame. As I say it is not designed to travel any distance, but to make its way round an obstacle course.
The Enduro, is designed to make good progress over long distances on a variety of surfaces.

What he said.
I knew someone who had managed to road register a trials bike like the pic below. It was a bit of a pain because he was always after anyone with a rack to carry fuel for him. I fell for it once but riding around like a timebomb soon wears thin.
For an easy (if not exciting) to maintain and reliable trail bike that's learner legal I'd aim for a Honda XRL125. Leccy foot is worth lotsa horsepower when you've been upside down a few times.

My Son has one which may be available, I know he is considering selling it, a buyer might twist his arm. He got this bike when he was 17 as a learner legal bike, he has since taken his test, and wants a bigger one, he is looking at DRZ400's.
He has a Yamaha XT125R which is again 4 stroke, we bought it for him when it was about 3 months old with 1,000 miles on, it is 11 months old now, and I think he would be looking for in the order of £1500, which is half the price of a new one.
He has used it to commute to College in Colchester 3 days a week, it has been 100% reliable.

This is not a picture of the actual bike, but it is the same as this, in Black, with white decals. It has one minor scuff on the front mudguard where he managed to roll it off of the sidestand when checking tyre pressures in a petrol station.
