View Full Version : Dyno - Remapping

Right, currently have the exhaust off the bike and it's at work having some lunchtime alterations done to it with the odds and sods of stainless tube we have floating about (well ..... that somehow turned up in a delivery yesterday.) :grin2
But I'm pretty sure it will either need the old yoshi box plugged into it or remapping/set up on a dyno etc etc.
Question is where is the best place near me (Southend) to get it done without loosing an arm and leg in the process ?
If I get my K4 sorted with a Power Commander I will be taking it to Dynospeed Developments..............

why not speak to Southern Cross, there isnt anything about tuning that Andy doesnt know and they deal with any tuning too, you have been there before so could likely get it done cheaper ;)

Perry at pease's in braintree for a remap - he does a wicked job & charges about £30 - He's a diamond fella
Not sure about the cost of having it plugged in a Yosh box - i get mine done free at parky's by glen :grin2
(tez stick a K&N in it as well it's made loads of difference to mine & when you have it stuck on the Yosh box ask them to put 5% more on the top end, You wont believe how much more mine pulls now it's mental) :grin2

I would be taking the bike to Southern Cross for the suspension jobey but didn't think about the Power Commander, I'll give Andy a ring.
Cheers for that Mick

Not too worried about making it go any faster John, just want to make sure it's running properly when I take that huge box off from under it as I'm making a new link pipe at work.
Spoke to a mate today who has the yoshi box and they are gonna set it up for me when I'm ready for free so all sorted now.

why didn't you just buy the micron race system? it's cheaper than the road version :grin2
It will run so much better if you stick the K&N on mate.

Believe it or not the days of K&N filters making much difference to an injected bike (or any bike for that matter) are long gone, its long been known that in a lot of cases a K&N is no more efficient at allowing air to pass through than a standard filter ;)
In most cases a good setup on a dyno is the best thing that can be done, all engines can be tuned to a limit and improved just by mild tuning and adjustment of the fueling.
There are also cases where aftermarket exhausts give no real noticeable difference too, this has been shown already with some of the more recent bikes, a full Akrapovic system when fitted to an RSVR made no more than 2bhp over the Akrapovic slip ons and yet they cost another £1000.
Also the Yamaha R6 and the GSXR1000K7 are reported to have exhaust systems that are nigh on perfect for power delivery and the all important scavenging that is required to produce that power ;)
Which is why exhaust systems are costing more and more these days, simply put it costs that much to actually improve on standard headers that the cost has to be passed on.
Add to that the fact that these days engines (especially the 600's) are coming out with more power than was ever imagineable you can see why Yamaha (with their new R6) are saying it actually going to take you a lot of money to do anything with it to improve on the tuning as it is, by that i am talking about serious engine work.
A decent dyno tuner will be able to tweak the fueling on an electronically mapped system to give a good enough result without the need to resort to changing much anyway ;)
I slung a K&N on my R1 the other day (only because at £20 it was a bargain :D ) it never made a blind bit of difference on my ZX9R (proven on a dyno with stage 1 kit and full Akrapovic system) and the only difference it seems to have made on the R1 is that the throttle seems a smidge smoother :)

On my last TL i had a full Akroprovic system with 52 mm headers and titanium cans it was set up at TTS by Richard Albans and it was actually producing less power than std headers with scorpion cans so the akro was taken off and sold

OK Lets start again.
The hyrdaformed micron can I fitted was put on purely for cosmetic reasons. I'm experienced enough to realise a can is never going to make that much difference. I just prefer the micron to the standard can, and the bike is more than quick enough not to worry with performance mods.
I purchased the road legal can (a)because It was offered at a decent price (b)because they didn't have a race version and mainly because the road legal can is E-marked so even after loosing the silencer box in place of a straight through link pipe, the old bill still can't touch me because I'm not touching the end can which in the eyes of the law is road legal. The worse they can do is issue a ticket to do the old mot test center thing and what are they going to do ? Say "oh look ...... a road legal E-marked can. Heres your ticket stamped sir".
As latey has said, the minor fuel adjustments is all that is needed, the original question was asking the best way to acheive that, and it turns out the yoshi box should be 99% acurate enough to stop it running too lean or rich so not causing any long term problems with the bike.
:grin2 So Sorted

I will give you a quick story about Mistral
You take a bike to them to get a dyno check and adjustment of fueling
You give them a K&N filtered airbox and a standard one and ask them to play around.
You get a bike back that has been on the dyno and a printout done
You get the bike back with the K&N airbox fitted having been dynoed
And you realise that they have just fitted the airbox and not bothered to actually open it and fit the K&N air filter that was just dumped in there ready for them to use.
What does that tell you? :D
It tells me that i sent it down there with a loose air filter, and they just fitted the box without even having had a look inside, dynoed it, adjusted nothing and sent it back.
Whilst they are known to be good tuners, i assume they were just having a bad week (thats how long they had the bike) ;)

Well considering they didnt open the airbox, there is no way that they could have looked at the carbs, thats for sure, or they would have seen the airfilter flying around inside it ;)
To me it looked like all's they did was give the bike a power run with the different airboxes and even then i have no proof of that because we only got the power run and without the air/fuel curve.
Now compared to Dynospeed at Chigwell (who will let you stand there all the way through the tuning) and also Southern Cross who will not only tune it but also try to keep the cost of the tuning down to the bare minimum (and in most cases give you the initial run for free) it left a bit of a blank feeling ;)

Mistral shagged one of my 1200 bandits up aswell. Put the wrong jets in it when I had it set up with stage 3 gear.

Thread not important anymore as I have decided to put standard can back on so grab yourself a bargain and see the sale section for a k6/k7 Micron can for sale. :grin2

**** 'appens as they say, to be honest as far as messing around with any real tuning my bikes and i imagine Jet's too will only ever be going down to Dynotech near Basingstoke from now on :)

If your going to basingstoke, you may aswell go to PDQ who are bloody brilliant.

I know Rob Wittey who works for PDQ as he is one of the BMCRC riders, but Dynotech are amongst the best in the business as far as 400cc engines go ;)

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh you did't say what bike :reading
PDQ are good though. They used to specialise in doing V-max's ...... Don't know if they still do ?
:grin3

Mick - do you have any contact details or a URL for Southern Cross?
Cheers.

Another Essex-based dyno that I would recommend is MSS Discovery Racing (of BSB fame), based in Thorpe-Le-Soken (2 miles from my door), sorted ot my track bike for me in a big way - http://www.mssdiscoveryracing.com/contact_us.cfm
