20 July 2007 - Issued 15:30

During the Bennetts British Superbike Championship first free practice at Mallory Park, an incident occurred at the Esses section of the circuit.

The rider involved was Ollie Bridewell.

Initial evidence shows that he lost control and fell from his machine making a heavy impact with the surface and then the Recticel “type A” protective barrier. He sustained critical head and neck injuries. He was treated initially at trackside and then at the circuit medical centre by the BSB Medical Team, where he succumbed to his injuries.

The incident is being fully investigated by the MCRCB and the relevant authorities.

On behalf of MCRCB Events and the BSB community we extend our profound sympathies.

Got the news just after it happened when one of the R6 cup riders rang Shaun this afternoon :(

Although the story at the time seems to lend itself to him actually highsiding quite dramatically whilst leaving the Esses and him then actually leaving the track, going over the barrier and hitting a tree (however i am sure its pure speculation).

Its a crying shame, he didnt do too well last year on the Vivaldi bike but this year he has been riding really well, you got to feel for his team mate too who is none other than his brother :(

RIP Ollie :(

Yeah he was 22 and his brother as i recall is in his first season in BSB at age 19 too :(

Absolutely gutting but as Perilous said a while ago, you dont tend to get minor injuries at Mallory, even the smallest crashes tend to produce really bad accidents, you only have to look at the warnings that BSB had with this track 2 seasons ago when Kiyonari (who was leading the championship) nigh on killed himself and handed it to Lavilla.

But those that have either ridden at Mallory or have watched it, you will know that the Esses is an extremely fast part of the circuit and infamous for highsides, in todays rain it was even more dangerous :(
