Since i have passed my hgv class 2 test and have been training for my class 1 artic licence i have learnt just how vunerable motorcyclists are aswell as being one myself, it does say in the highway code that no vehicle should undertake or overtake a large goods vehicle while it is turning ie: into or onto a road or round abouts, but it seems that people just dont care, ive had loads of motorcyclists and cars appear from no where whilst going round ronudabouts and stuff. Yeah they probably think the lorry is going slow i can get round it because they dont understand the room you need to turn without your trailer mounting the kurb, but in a fully loaded 40 tonne articulated lorry you cant just go slamming on the brakes because when you do that the unit stops dead but the trailer is still trying to push in the direction it is travelling which can cause it to tip over or jack knife. The main thing I have to watch for is cyclists and motorcyclists filtering in traffic because of their vunerability it would be very easy to squash them and not feel a thing so before i move away i check around the sides and front and blind spot for any moving up the side of me, I know that when i get another bike i will give large vehicles the room the need to turn because it is hard to spot something moving around the left of you on round abouts because most of your left mirror is blocked by your trailer, most of the people who cut up lorrys are car drivers and learner riders because they are so impatiant or dont understand hgv's and the way they need to use the road space available.

Just thought I would share this with you guys ive learnt alot whilst doing my hgv licence.:jumping2

got to say that i find most HGV drivers very bike aware, and give you room.
but then car or bike i always hang back at roundabouts etc to give them room, just find they will always stay over if theres room to let you pass.
some car drivers do, others don`t know your there and the odd one will deliberatly try to block you (had a good one last weekend, doing his utmost, what a waste of time!)
but well worth pointing out as it makes people more aware of how HGV drivers see things, and congrates on now being a HGV driver.

I'd like to think we are....................

Becky I would like to see all New car drivers have a go in an Artic before they let them loose on the roads, the amount for times I have had to take it wide turning left into a Garage only to find some knob (and mostly car drivers) coming up the inside.............. One of these days I'm going to keep going and say " I didn't see you, you was in my blind spot" :D

yep most car drivers just dont look on our way out last night in a very noticeable Discovery ,the car infront of me just straightened out a roundabout from the left lane to the middle then back to the left as he exited the roundabout , as i passed him i was the one who got the dirty look as i should not have been there i hasten to add the driver was about 75 years of age approx , he was totally oblivious to me being there if he does that to my car what would he do to a bike or even a moped i shudder to think ...........oh by the way we had a very enjoyable meal with some very good friends thank you ....you know who you are he he :laugh2:grin2

Having been knocked off a bike by an artic, I'm pleased to show awareness is being taught and understood these days.
The jerk that had me off was only concerned with filling his fat gob with a Yorkie bar at the time....
