I intended to go to Wickhambrook this week, the weather has been quite nice.

I had sorted out with some friends that we would head up on Wednesday, the meet is on a Tuesday http://www.bikersoracle.com/vfr/forum/images/smilies/smiley_banghead.gif , fortunately I sought confirmation before we went.

So we decide to head off to Great Bently. Meet at 18:45 round my friends house and head on up.

18:40 I get the bike out and go to start her, nothing, flat battery (again, second time in a month).

I took one of the battery conditioners away when the season started, thinking the bike would get some use, the weather thought otherwise http://www.bikersoracle.com/vfr/forum/images/smilies/1668.gif

Still, I did the Whale and chip run a week and a half ago, clocking up some 300+ miles so the battery should have lasted a lot longer than a week and a bit without charging http://www.bikersoracle.com/vfr/forum/images/smilies/mad.gif . I cant see what would be draining the battery, I have no alarm and the autocom is wired into the ignition.

Anyway, Rebeccas bike is sitting there, I dont much like it, I have to adjust the suspension for a fat person and its a bit revy for me, little engine braking etc (Cbr 600). I put mine away and hook it up to the battery conditioner, I unlock her bike and wheel it out. I start it, all seems ok so I go in to put my helmet on (I live in a quiet street, we can leave the bikes unattended for short periods of time).

I walk out and there is smoke bellowing out of the bike http://www.bikersoracle.com/vfr/forum/images/smilies/eek.gif . To say I **** myself would be an understatement, fire doesnt bother me (helpful in my line of work) but how the hell do I tell her that I broke or set fire to her bike http://www.bikersoracle.com/vfr/forum/images/smilies/help.gif

The ignition goes off, off comes the helmet, no flames. I look around the bike no puddle of oil. I cant crawl around the bike in leathers so I go in and get changed, this has to be looked at.

I come out and phone my mate, "If I can get up there I will see you there". Off comes the fairing, I am thinking, inspection window, seals, missing parts. It had not had a proper ride since Rebecca took it in for its MoT and service.

I managed to narrow it down to spilt oil from the oil change, running down the outside of the sump and settling in a trap between the exhaust, where it goes 2 into 1. No major problem then, I mop up any oil I could find, got her up to temp, no more smoke so I put her back together again. An hour has elapsed since I hooked up my bike to the battery conditioner and its telling me the battery is fully charged, that does not seem right to me. I disconnect the battety conditioner and try and start her, she fires first go.

I phone my mate, "you still there?" he replies "yes, there is loads up here, we must have seen a couple of thousand come and go." I said "stay there I'm on my way".

I got there at 21:15 and there was eight of us there http://www.bikersoracle.com/vfr/forum/images/smilies/101131.gif I saw loads of bikes leaving Bently, at least I made it.

well that was pants, I was one of the people leaving bentley by that point! Was a good turn out.

Your battery problem could be linked to the rectifier, what bike is it? Does it misfire? Bump start etc?

And I know its silly but your not knocking it a click past the steering lock and leaving the parking light on?

I have a VFR Vtec, they are not known for problems with the rectum recifier (unlike the earlier models) but its not unkown to happen. I think I may get the battery load tested and see what it comes up with.

Does sound like the old rectum fryer problem, betting the run down do dingyness was the last straw.

Although if it charged up quickly, you may just have had a dry connection?

Don't believe it - A friend was only a week into his ownership of a VFR800 VTec and the rectifier failed in London....
