View Full Version : The old Helmet off in a petrol station chestnut

This old Chestnut has been raised on another bike forum.
One biker who was asked to remove his helmet in the kiosk when paying, waved the cash at the attendant, who repeated the requested to remove his helmet, he again offered the cash. It was refused if he woold not remove his helmet, so he left. He got a visit from Mr Plod, accusing him of stealing the petrol, he pointed out that it could not be theft as he offered payment on several occassions and it was refused. Theft requires that you should intentionally take goods with the intention of permanantly depriving the owner of said goods. He had no such intention, and offered payment which was refused. The Police agreed that it was not theft!
Suggestions on that forum such as if they refuse to enable the pump, that the most annoying thing to do is to place the nozzle on the floor and ride away, then the assistant has to come out and replace the nozzle! ....or wear a balaclava under your helmet so that when you remove your helmet, you are no more identifiable!
Which petrol stations in Essex do or don't request that you remove your helmet?
Discuss.......

Discuss.......The one on the A120/A131, just up from McDonalds that is currently being rebuilt, banned me despite me filling my tank every day there for about 5 years (about £40 a week). One day I was asked to remove my helmet and I refused. The manageress said I was no longer welcome in there if I wasn't prepared to do that.
The Tescos at Great Dunmow kept asking me to remove my helmet but I kept saying no and wrote to the manager, they stopped asking me after that.
The petrol station at Leamouth Road (east london)will not switch the pumps on for me anymore so I don't use that one. Had a shouting match with the attendants
I'm banned from one on Cambridge Heath Road/Old Ford Road (east london)after an argument about removing my crash helmet.
I badly needed fuel at the services on the M11 at Stansted and had to remove my crash helmet before they switched on the pump. Other bikers weren't very happy and one went in and reported 2 mobile phones being used on their forecourt and made them switch the pumps off and use the tannoy to make the drivers stop.
I just object to being treated as a criminal before I've given them cause and as I get older I am turning into a bit of a Victor Meldrew.

Never been asked to remove my helmet either to be honest, and i am sure Tesco did actually put out a statement to their forecourts suggesting that it wasnt necessary (but down to the attendants discretion) :)

I only use two petrol stations, Shell Ripple road Barking and small independent Store Street/Gower Street both have let me keep my lid on. But due to this weather I find it easyier to take it off. There is one in Penge sarf London that told me to remove so told him to feck off.

I filled up yesterday, and the lady in the car in front was on her mobile phone the entire time she filled up!

The Jet & esso garages on both sides of the A127 at brentwood road area require me everytime i go the to remove the helmet & the jet even ask for payment first!! so naturally i go into pain in the arse mode!!
I go in & when he says how much petrol do you want i always reply
" how long is a piece of string?? "
Or the best one was
" how many times will i have to hit you with my helmet in order to bludgen you to death you annoying creatin!!"
I usually say £20 cos i know my bike will never need that much & i always insist upon a reciept!! then when i put £10.01p in the tank i go in an ask for my change!! & then i ask for change only no notes just to be annoyin back......
they really hate me there now, occasionally the have recognised me.. give me a thumbs up & turned the pump on & let me wear my helmet.... so where is the consistancy???
But when i asked why they do this he said that.. an this is the best bit!!!! an i quote!
"you white boys come & steal our petrol on bikes"
i said thats racist remark & im offended! he said, so what do you want me to do about it & refused to apologise (BTW i was just bein a pain in the arse tho)
so i made a call to billericay plod station & they said that it wasn't a racist remark it was a fair Statment of the truth!! (how ****ed off was i!!)
i then asked the plod.... If i was in his position & said "you Packi's come & steal my petrol" could i be accused of Racism & he said more than likely! ( i n no way mean to offend anyone with that bit but its what i said & i am sorry if you are offended)
This place is just flipped i tell ya!!

A little thing called courtesy! It is annnoying speaking to people with their lids on, also people walking around with them onb tend to bump into things and people which are out side their vision. Its just one of those things that p*ss you off whilst you are working. People get irratated by muslim women wearing their head gear with the little slitty eye holes, its the same principle.
Not to mention the forecourt attentant doesnt know you from adam, if you were to steal petrol and the video showed you with a lid on, guess who gets it in the neck.

Apart from the 'being treated as a criminal' aspect, I have to ride 100 miles a day and in the winter on the motorway any gap will be exploited by the nasty nasty cold air. I put my neck tube and helmet on before my jacket as this makes for a nice seal. Once that helmet comes off and has to go back on the neck tube all rucks up making it uncomfortable and no longer windproof. If I want a good seal again I have to take my jacket off and faff about, all cos some chav put a fiver in his scooter and sodded off on a previous ocasion. And I'll bet he just looked zitty and exactly the same as all his mates so video identification seems a bit pointless.
In summer of course I'm just being bloody minded!
DoodleBug

I have a neck warmer thing that goes under your jacket and is easy to put back under your lid. I also had to buy petrol every day.
I wouldn't wear a lid walking into a bank, or a shop so I won't in a petrol station either.

Interestingly, someone else on the other forum works on a Police crime desk in west london, they report they see about 5 drive offs in a day, through the 12 petrol stations in their patch. The last two wheeled drive off was about a year ago! So a petrol station is 1800 times more likely to have a car drive off than a bike!
Bikes are not a big drive off hazard, apparantly the biggest problem, is car drivers who pick pumps that are out of sight or on the limit of the cctv cameras, the driver remains in the car and a passenger fills up.

Esso at Bush fair in Harlow refuse to put the pump on until you remove your helmet. Just don't use it anymore.

Top tip from me:
ALWAYS ALWAYS GET A RECEIPT AND KEEP IT FOR 6 MONTHS!
Many drive offs are not at all. The attendant notes your number, face is on cctv, purposely forgets to give a receipt then later get their mates to fill up without paying. You then get a visit from the plod and they can prove you were at the pumps at a given time and funny old thing, you can't prove you paid.
Filling stations are full of so called super attendants that are really good at getting details of drive offs. Bet they have lots of happy mates.
Happens far more than you might think and the increase in so called drive offs is probably largely because of this.
Oh and anyone reading this that happens to be honest and works the pumps, sorry.

Oh I forgot, when I was having the slanging match with the Leamouth Road attendants I told them that there was more chance of them robbing me with card fraud, than me running off with a tenners worth of fuel. This was just after it turned out that the Tamil tigers were blackmailing attendants (with threats of violence to their families, the poor sods) to swipe card details in order to raise funds for the fight back in Sri Lanka.

I don't see why it's such a big effort to take it off, you only have to click it and wap it off.
I use the shell garage at the Bell junction now as you whack your card in, insert your pin and fill up.
I agree with the comment above and doodlebugs.. i always take my helmet off when at petrol stations, i pull up on the bike, turn off engine, take gloves and helmet off.. and fill up.. then carry my helmet.
The reason i do this is purely safety, and if i worked at a petrol station i would ask anyone with their face covered (chavs, muslim women, bikers) to remove anything obstructing their face.. i couldnt care less if thats against your 'rights'/'religion', when they refuse, management, still refusing, police.. Its not just courtesy, its also a safety issue, how do they know your not riding an unlicensed plated bike, and about to rob em? or that you nicked that bike ten minutes ago..
I mean lets think scenario wise here, someones stolen your bike, gone to fill it up, the attendants asked them to remove helmet, you will be thankful when they do and the police have got their face on CCTV..
Might take an extra couple of minutes or so to remove a helmet, but think about it for both sides of the bread here eh guys.. they aint just being rude, they are trying to cover their own backs.. i think refusing to comply with a simple safety precaution is just childish and stupid....:reading

98/100 times i will leave my helmet on. Some have said it only takes a second to take it off, but its longer than that.
Take gloves off, unbuckle lid, find somewhere safe to put the helmet while filling up that isn't dirty... which normally requires, putting the side stand down, getting off the bike and putting it down. Then having to get back on the bike to fill it up, then all in reverse.
If its a hot day and im not in a rush then i'll take it off. But when its cold, im in a rush, or most other occasions i'll leave it on.
If they don't want my custom then i won't go there, but first i'll annoy them first then hoon off to actually give them a reason to hate me/judge me before knowing different.

You have to take your gloves off anyway to get your hand in your pocket to pay for petrol and your bike wont float because you have your lid on, it has to go on the stand anyway.
I pull up to the pump, side stand down, gloves on the seat and remove lid and put gloves inside and either put it somewhere clean or hang it on the bike, open petrol cap and fill it up.
Grab lid and gloves, walk into the petrol station, fill the lid with munchies (optional) get my wallet out and remove enough cash, pay, walk out of garage putting lid on as walk to bike (dodging micra's and transits on the way) whack key in ignition, start her up, put gloves on and bugger off.
You could even leave your lid on while you fill up and take it off while walking to the door.
It's not pocket rocket science :P
Although I must admit I do try and get away with it if i'm wearing my arai face-off, it's one of those double loop jobby's and people can see my face anyway, it's got me into a few arguments in shops where a burka clad shopkeeper is shouting at me to take it off because they can't see my face!

Several people have said its not difficult or time consuming to take your helmet off so why not just comply?
......but you are I think missing the point! WHY SHOULD WE COMPLY?
There are big holes in all the arguments made,
....if the bike was stolen 10 minutes before then the rider is unlikely to have the key to be able to open the petrol cap to fill it up, and trying to open a bike petrol cap without a key is a messy business (ask R6Paul)
.....Safety? I don't think so? if you are refferring to the risk of a helmeted invader attacking staff, I think the staff can tell the difference between someone turning up bursting in with a baseball bat with a helmet on, in comparison to a bike pulling up, filling up with petrol and standing in the queue with a tenner or a credit card in their hand. ....This is the madness of it, if they won't enable the pumps, fine, put the hose on the floor, and go elsewhere, but to let you fill up, get into the shop, queue to pay, then when you are stood holding out banknotes refuse to take them unless you remove your lid is stupid, there is no logical argument that I can see to back that up!
....and they will NOT ask a masked Muslim lady to uncover her face.
It is discrimination and thats what gets peoples goat so much, why should I be assumed to be up to no good because I am a motorcyclist? It is after all a legal requirement for a motorcyclist to wear a helmet. I have even heard of one biker with a flip up helmet who with his helmet flipped up was asked to remove it!

Follow the Sikh religion, pop a turban on and then you can ride your bike with it on, pop into the filling station without removing it or work on a construction site without a safety helmet.
Think you may need to be a very devout Sikh and pray loads if you ride an R1 and expect it to help you when you highside though...

Funnily enough, I know a seikh very well and he says, even if the law doesn't require him to wear a crash helmet, he would not get on a bike without one! He is not a biker incidentally, just that if he were to get on a bike, he would remove his turban and put on a crash helmet, (probably at home in his bedroom).
I have only ever once seen him without his turban and that was in his hotel room when he was preparing to go out.

I went to Ireland on my bike about 17 years ago and remember the first time I stopped at a fuel station to fill up. Had a wrestling match with this bloke cos I'd never experienced non self service pumps.
He filled it up, told me how much, took my money and then fetched the change.

Oh don't say that! they'll be insisting we take our jackets off as well next!
Waving cash at someone is a personal safety issue???.....I can't quite see that myself!......imagine the headline "a petrol station attendant was severely whipped with a ten pound note!"
The long and short of it, is that those intent on violent criminal actions, whether wearing a helmet or not, do not fill up with petrol then stand in an orderly queue with a tenner in their hand, that is the actions of a normal law abiding customer, they screech to a halt outside the door, burst in all hyped up screaming "EVERYBODY DOWN ON THE FLOOR AND NO ONE WILL GET HURT!" or similar.

Going to bump this up for a bit....
Went to fill up with petrol in the petrol garage in Fobbing/Corringham yesterday, nowhere to put my helmet on while filling up so I left it on.(I always remove mine when I go into the actual shop)
Bloke called me into the station and asked me how old I was was :o
Apparently they wont let you fill up your bike unless you remove your helmet because the kids have been filling up bikes and scrambling about.
A good thing imo, not because of the safety aspect of kids hurting themselves/other people but also I won't have to listen to the kids riding up and down the field while fishing in the pond behind the station!
Also another good thing is that I maybe able to pass as a kid, not bad at 27 :laugh1
I was also in the BP in Westcliff on Tuesday, two customers in front of me is a bloke with his skid on, the shy girl on the till is polity asking him to remove his helmet when he finally realises what she is asking he shouts "I ain't taking it off, I will have to put my ear plugs back in and everything".
Nice that he is protecting his ears from his loud pipes, shame about the jeans and trainers though!

I'll always leave my lid on, partly through laziness......mostly through laziness to be honest, but also for other really silly reasons like, it takes me a few minutes to get comfortable in me lid, and having to adjust the chin strap and all that bo***cks, and if im wearing earphones it takes an age to get me lid back on so they dont pop out of my ears...blah blah blah......like i said, mostly through laziness!!:grin2

Thats the sound of the wind noise with earplugs in.......so i still cant hear anything else
so why listen to that, when i can listen to some tunes!!!!
Its not dangerous, its not stupid so get off your high horse and let me ride how i see fit!!
now at the risk of that sounding quite offish, i would appologise, but how many times have we had examples of people writing stuff on here without thinking it through and therefore it comes across in the wrong way despite the "no offence meant" comment that preceedes it.
Who are you to tell me i dont concentrate 100% on my riding if i listen to music...i actually find i ride better witha bit of SLAYER ringing out
So please, in futer to save any upset on my part or anyone elses, think before youpreach about other peoples riding habbits or abilities, just because you dont agree with it doesnt make it wrong!

Think you need to get off your high horse mate dont you......
As i said "No offence meant" Not my problem if you cant take a few comments...Thats my two pence worth on it, dont expect you to agree, just expressing my view on it.
& for the record mate, i thought about what i said before posted it.....

Not my problem if you cant take a few comments...
I can take comments no problem, but for you to assume/insinuate that my riding ability suffers because i listen to music is just wrong and out of line. Youve never riden with me, you dont really know me and yet you publicly state in one way or another that i cant ride a bike properly or im dangerous because i listen to some tunes while riding.
I like to think im quite a laid back kinda fella, hopefully those that know me well enough will agree, most things are like water off a ducks back so to speak, but i draw the line at being accused of being dangerous or being told im stupid!
maybe i am taking this personaly, and i shouldnt, so its done......i'll forget about it and go back to my corner and continue being misserable
no high horse involved!!!:grin2

A few years back I entered PC World down at Lakeside, was stopped by a bored security guard and was told I'd have to leave my helmet on my bike. I asked him for £300 cash up front in case it got nicked. You can imagine his reply.
Apparently it was 'Company Policy' at that time not to allow large bags or anything that you could 'hide stuff' in.
After taking a deep breath i told him where he could stick the helmet and left.
Wrote a snotty letter to the Chairman of DSG group (Dixons, PC World etc.) and got a very polite letter explaining letters would be sent to all stores in the group reminding them of their policy, and that it didn't intend stopping anyone carrying anything in, but you may be subject to search if you left.
Course, if they tried to detain me I'd insist they arrest me first. That could lead to an interesting suit if they don't have reasonable suspicion. Would carrying a helmet do?

Just for your information, only a Police officer can arrest you for suspicion of an offence. A citizens arrest (read security guard) cannot arrest for suspicion of an offence, only for an actual offence. The result of this is that if you are arrested by anyone other than a Police officer for an offence, and then not subsequently convicted for any reason whatsoever, then you can sue for wrongfull arrest.
I feel sure that DSG store security would be very gratefull, to be reminded of this. :grin2

LOL cheers for that, didn't realise.
Always felt sure that 'citizens' arrest could only be performed once certain acts had taken place, but never the details.

this deserves a bump
esso i think , at fiddlers
for the first time i got asked to pay first
the guy said it was because teh manager was there
i was like bike riders are honest unlike car drivers, i said was it a ped and he said yes :P
i like the idea of leaving the pump on the floor , i might go there tomoz and do that haha
yes im a ****er :P

Depending on the equipment, leaving the pump on the floor usually means that the transaction hasn't finished, so they can't take your money 'cos the til won't let them :/
Wonder where you'd stand if say you put in £10 of petrol, left the pump on the floor, put the money on the counter and walked out.

if u have put in more than a tenner i would imagine that would be classed as theft as you have deliberately not paid for all the fuel that you took.
I tend to take my lid off most of the time, Rainham Tesco's i dont coz theres normally noone there and the woman just smiles at me, i tend to have music on as well but turn it off when im in there. I've never been told to remove my lid, maybe coz im a girl, but i tend to, mostly coz if i was told, i'd prob go red, so i take it off so i wont get told off. ,lol.
Oh and i put my gloves inside my lid too. And ive been told by other people as well that my riding improves slightly when i have music on quietly........... its not like im a car driver with music blaring and bass line pumping, i have a bit of music playin just for me, and it helps me relax, had to stop listening to proper heavy stuff on the bike coz it made me a little GRRRRR but now i can listen to anything. (Creed and Stonesour are my chill out cd's for on the work commute.)

I only tend to use three places to fill up. Shell garage Ripple Road A13. Texaco Cotton Street A13 junction and BP A13 near Newham Flyover. All 3 have never asked me to remove my lid once. I sometimes remove it when I pull up as I might need to get a bottle of drink and it saves me bumping into things when wondering about. Dont get some garages and asking for either the lid to be removed or paying before filling . I would refues to pay before filling tell them to feck off.

I had a problem at one garage in Ruislip, who had to take payment for the fuel first, and kept asking me how much i wanted...i said about a tenner and threw in my debit card (kinda stupid really). Then he started moaning that he couldnt take my debit card as it might not authorise...but i never pay cash for petrol!
So i kindly told him that he WILL take my debit card, and i WILL be checking my bank statement online for anything other then my fuel bill. an lucky for me, he did!

Our ones aren't chip and pin either. Just put the card in put the fuel in, then put the card in again if you want a receipt.

I only really use the one up the road, somerfield on waterhouse lane, never asked me once to remove my lid but i was filling car up £80 a week when i was a rep, one women hates me there and always tries winding me up asking me to ask for my fags 3-4 times before the deaf bint finally gets em.
i agree its slightly rude not taking it off but i dont care, takes too long with double d ring etc

i have never not once had any trouble at any petrol station, to be fair its about time they got their ass into gear and designed a station with front and rear cameras and solve the pitfull

Was reading in the paper the other week that tne on stock road has crazy stingers in built now! If you don't pay it raises the spikes and flattens the tyres. Not been up there latly tho.
I don't get any problems in Tesco, Sainsburys or BPs here. Only had problems in BPs in Coventry

Yer there was a picture and article in our local paper. If i get a sec will go up there tomoz and get some pics (is just around the corner from me)
Installed their own stinger. Not sure how it'll go down when they use it though, as they could be done for criminal damage.

i always wear my lid when i get fuel - i hate having to take it off - if they ask me i get the hum but i will remove it if need be - im not a theif, but then you have to understand that i could be. however, if i was a theif, i wouldnt remove my lid, i would have fake plates, and i wouldnt bother going in to pay would i lol!

They've had those stingers in a garage in Wickford for over a year.
All was great until the attendant 'accidentally' activated it, blowing out all four tyres on some poor family's car.
Oh how I laughed :)

I had a good one at tesco's in ponders end [ they seem to have de-activated all the pay at pumps in london ?] woman asked me to take my lid off so i did [ not bothered either way - in fact since i walked into the door and scratched the visor i do now anyway ! ] so the guy in the next queue starts having a go at the attendant as to why, and would she ask a muslim woman in a veil etc etc i just paid up and left them to it ! :grin1
I just fill up in latchingdon now, they know me and it's usually such unsociable hours theyre still locked in :laugh1
