Depends on the car obviously, but my son is through Norwich Union Direct...it is only a Saxo 1.1 but he was 18 when he took out the policy and paid around £ 1600 iirc.
Down to around £ 1300 following 1 yrs NCB.....but with NU you get an accellerated bonus meaning that after 18months he has earned 2 years NCB and this is apparently recognised by other insurance companies.....other than that I hear good things about Esure and Hastings Direct, but sure someone will come up with more options.....
Unfortunately although I'm an insurance broker I don't get involved with private motor or houses...all commercial stuff....

Hi Dave, I am in the same boat. I have a 17 year old looking for a car soon. Best I have seen is £1560, what car is your lad looking for?
One thing I have found is that if you specify tpft, you sometimes get a higher price quote than if you specify fully comp!
Keep me informed I am interested too.

Well my bro got cheap insurance & fully comp by buying an older car, so it was then classed as a classic car & i believe it was about £400yr, on a renault 5 gts,1989 model.
Footman & james
il be doing the same later this year
Bad point not actually a proper no claims bonus scheme although will confirm to other companies how many years claim free driving you have
Restricted milage, 8000 a year
But there is a big bonus!! new cars are crap so u get something thats cheap easy to work on & cheap as chips to run!!

I have Sun Alliance policy for the main car. Eldest (19) is added to that and earnt no claims. If I own and register a 2nd car but then give him use of it through the same policy, I believe he would earn no claims. I haven't actually done that but I believe it works that way and it might help him build a few years of bonus up.
Don't the NAAFI still offer good deals on car insurance? I assume he is serving when you mentioned his travels.

The Naafi are garbage for insurance and if i am brutally honest tell him to not bother mentioning that he is keeping it at the barracks, if anything it can make the insurance higher :D
Very likely cheaper to insure it at the home address and put it down as social, domestic and pleasure only (lets face it, its not commuting to work if he is using it around the barracks area because he wouldnt be driving it to work ;) ).

Try the following:
Coop insurance www.cis.co.uk (http://www.cis.co.uk) always used to be cheap for young drivers but recently have been beaten by Quinn Direct www.quinn-direct.co.uk (http://www.quinn-direct.co.uk)
Quinn Direct have recently lowered their rates for young drivers and are usually the cheapest. They dont supply rates to the consolidators like go compare and money supermarket so you need to go direct to their website or telephone them.
