fair dooooooo's
thats one lovely bike
i might be a little bias ;)
i had a x reg black and silver j1...
(don't think they sufferred from flakey wheel paint like the other colours of the era)
my advise would be raise the rear 5-10 mm at the shock... your'll be shocked with the difference ... improved turn in.. but more importantly the bike will hold a line once your in a bend (mine would always run wide .. that was until i raised the rear)

^^ Just under 16000 miles now.
TWO - I remember reading about the benefits of adding a riser on these bikes. I'll try and find a 5mm and give it a try. I've only got 29" inside leg so am usually on my toes when stationary as it is...
Cans....well, I have the choice at the moment of a cut down, stubby S/S Viper can or a Micron S/S.
Neither have baffles, both have hangers. Not sure which one would have better sound but I'm swinging towards the Micron.

from memory its a 22mm spanner to adjust the height (and use a drill bit as a feeler gauge to set extra height correctly)
J1's were the last to have an adjusting nut... replaced by spacers J2 onwards
(although a very few J1's had spacers just before the J2's came out)
the performance bikes setting were:
Rear
Preload one full turn back if weighing less than 14 stone
Rebound 7 clicks out from full in
Compression 8 clicks out from full in
Ride Height +8mm
Front
Preload 4 lines showing
Rebound 4 clicks out from full in
Compression 6 clicks out from full in
well worth trying as you can always set the bike back to standard if they don't work for you

Agreed i went 20mm and it handles so much better
The are easy to do as they have a locking nuts on the mount so thats all you need to do
