Found out how it works...
lap timer
1.Press lap button (left handlebar) and within 0.7 sec press D (I found the only way it'll work is to press them both at the same time)
2.This brings up lap timer on right display
3.Start timing by pressing lap button
4.To store lap time press lap again (starts new lap)
5.To see lap times press button B
6. Use lap button to scroll through lap times,L1,L2 etc
7To start timing again press B
8.Clear lap memory by pressing lap button and A at the same time for 2 seconds.
9. To leave lap function press lap and then D or turn the ignition off

we should invest in a proper lap timer that reads off the beacons on pitwall...

I was thinking that as well, but I can get away with using this one on trackdays, when I remember to press the button that is
Think the proper ones are about £120 ish
Does your club not use the transponders?

nope. manual laptimers in the race office. they did some tests with transponders a few years back, but reverted to the tried/tested method.
