View Full Version : Where did the summer go?????

Just a quick note to say hello every one.

I currently live near Bromley but should be moving to Essex in the new year so thought it about time I started enjoying some of the Essex countryside, and although the summer may have come and gone in the blink of an eye I'm looking forward to some winter rides on the R6!

Would be good to hear from anyone, to probably point out where I'm going wrong with this forum thing as I'm a complete novice!

Went out for a 3 hour blast on Friday down to the South coast but only had my leathers only, and f*** me it was cold. Out with the winter clobber!!!

Not too sure about hardcore but i have to ride from Southend to Blackheah everyday regardless of the weather :D

Although i suppose being this close to Lewisham is hardcore enough :D

That's as close to Lewisham as you want to get (no offence meant to anybody living in Lewisham!!), still I have never heard of a any one having the wheels stolen off their bike while riding it!!! LOL

that is true, however it lives with the trickle charger on, otherwise the battery dies within a few weeks

(thats because its probably using the standard rated battery ;) most upgrade to the 14amp one and you never have any problems again ;) )

and moving swiftly back on track :D

Sounds like you might have a problem there! What do you ride? Either your battery is knackered, a gererator problem or you have a power hungry alarm!!

it happened at lydden hill. No apart from a couple of cracks in the fairing the bike was perfect. i high sided then it caught grip, the bike stood up pretty sharpish and i didnt have time to stop as i was heading towards the tyre wall. initially i thought i hit the tyre wall, but i managed to fall off before then, must have slipped on the grass.

Ron Haslam race school eh! A couple of guys on here did that school. Also back in May a few of us did the california superbike school, that was pretty cool, apart from being wet and cold :grin2

I cant wait until the weather gets nice again.

Shame about the accident but it could have been worse!!!

I have been around Lydden on an old R1, turned up to see a blade on fire being scooped up by a JCB! Not the best start to your first track day!! LOL

California Superbike School, fantastic, would you recommend it??

California Bike school is the way forward, there were people on that who were complaining about how little they learnt at the Ron Haslam one, there were people on another forum recently doing the same aswell.

I think for most the highlight of the day seemed to be meeting Ron Haslam :D

But the general feeling was that if you were a female then plenty of attention go shown towards you, if you were a bloke it was a case of try and keep up with me, but ultimately people said they have been on better organised track days.

The one thing CSS isnt, is unorganised, you get your monies worth thats for sure and the coaching starts from the basics, not just about "how can i get my knee down" :)

Sounds like CSS is a bit more comprehensive!! I can't knock the Ron Haslam school, but i suppoase it does depend on what instructor you get? I'll be booking early to avoid disappointment with the CSS!:rockon

The difference is that if you take your own bike, you get used to riding your own bike.

Also you have to start at level 1 regardless of how good 'you think' you are :)

5 track sessions of 20 minutes with 5 classroom sessions to teach the drills that you practice on track, its a very logical way of learning and you will be astonished at how little you actually know about riding, in comparison to how much you thought you knew ;)

One of the best days i have had :)

its an aprilia RSV1000 mille, and the battery has been upgraded on it too as late has mentioned, and according to my trickle charger the battery is in good condition, so either like u say my alarm drains it, or it never charges while riding.

A couple of easy test carried out with a multi-meter will tell you whats what.

(1) First a charge test measured (volts) accross the battery terminals while putting the generator under load (turn the lights on)

(2) Second a drain test measured (amps) inline on the negative side of the battery.

I used to be a car electrician so don't know the exact specs off the top of my head for your bike and alarm, but I'm sure they are either in the accompaning manual or on the web.

Alternatively just keep using your trickle charger, won't do any harm.

Both the meta and datatool alarm systems drain the Mille batteries ;)

Neither of my RSV's failed to start unless they were left over the winter for weeks without starting, as i didnt have them plugged into a charger, if they were used every couple of days they fired up without a problem :)

However switch to volts on the dash, with the engine at 3000 rpm you should be seeing upwards of 13.89volts really.

Minimum starting voltage on these big twins is around 11.9 volts, any less and the bike will probably fail to start, if the battery has around 12.8 volts in it as standard its healthy enough :)

The specific problem on the Mille is that when you turn the key, everything fires up, the fuel pump, the ECU blah blah.

A common trick is to turn the key, leave it for 5 seconds and then try and start it, if it doesnt start within 5 seconds leave it for a minute or so, it will only flood otherwise (more so when its cold).

Under no circumstances should you try and hit the button whilst using the throttle, the intertia from the bike firing can knacker the sprag clutch to the tune of around £500 ;)

Sounds to me like you know what you are talking about, and I'm NO expert when it comes to RSV milles! So just a big engine with lots of addition electronics adding extra drain. It all adds up to your battery needing to be in a good tip top, healthy state. Still slightly annoying having to always use a trickle. The price you pay for style!! :rockon
