I just rode around the block in Grays in 1977 and some bloke with a clipboard walked from the test centre and told me to do right then left turns then an emergency stop and he gave me a lisense, bout 17 quid then. My brother in law just took his direct access on an intensive course and dont quote me but i believe it was 5 days and 500 quid !!!

Can't give you any recommendations on who to go with in your area, but as far as costs go, to give you an idea of what to expect, Probike are offering the A2 Restricted course at 2 days = £350, 3 days = £470, 4 days = £580.
This web link will give you a list of training centres around your area....

Am I remembering incorrectly, or did I have to use indicators AND do hand signals? I'm sure that's how I was taught, but now it seems a bit overkill.

I really cannot remember if I used hand signals all I remember is I rode an XL250 Honda and wore a nice Heron Suzuki anorak. I took my test 2 weeks after my 17th birthday and as soon as I got home from the test my Father gave me his GT550 Suzuki, happy days !

Bit of a difference between the Honda and the Suzuki I bet.

I was real lucky as my Dad used to let me ride the GT up and down the Manorway to Coryton when I was 16 so it was an easy transition

phil did his last year, paid about £80-100 for CBT and about £450 for DAS i think. he also paid an extra £50 for a guaranteed pass (means if you fail you get up to 2 retests, bike hire and refresher lessons free, and if you do pass first time you get £25 back)
he did his through OneStop training in Colchester (on Barrack Street). Wayne who used to work there has now set up on his own down at Colchester Motorcycles (he took me for a day's one to one training after i had a bit of a moment down at Burnham last year and was brilliant!) but Mark and Phil who are still instructing at Onestop are both excellent too.
i had a back to biking refresher course with Mark before i bought my CB500 so can also vouch for the excellent instruction.
Phil did the restricted test in the end as he had a day of doing some really poor u turns which totally knocked his confidence, so costs for a restricted licence would be similar i reckon.
