View Full Version : What Do You Do For A Living?
Just wondered what everyone does for a living and what you have to do e.g. i work at good old Maplins as a sales assistant.:laugh2have to serve customers, use the till systems, deal with angry customers and idiot customers on the phone, plus put out delivery and ocassionally sort out paperwork.. tis such a fun job!:grin1
Thought this might be a worthwhile post so people can contact others in the trade should they have any questions or queries.. perhaps when moving jobs or something.:grin3
N.B. No Lateshift.. you do not work as a secret agent for the country.. you are not 007.. nor are you doodlebug, as much as you would like to believe!!:laugh1

I look at accident figures, then I try and work out why they happened, then I try and think of ways to stop them happening again, then I design those ways and draw them up for people to make comments on, then I change them if needed, then I write orders to contractors to have them constructed, then I go out and watch them build them and point at things as if I know what I'm talking about (waving plans about and looking through telescopes), then I get the bill, measure everything and pay for it. In between each stage I make lots of tea and go to the toilet a lot and get rid of it.
Or to put it another way, I make sure I'm indoors when it's nasty weather and outdoors when it's warm and sunny!:grin1

What an interesting job! So what is your job title Bayonet? Traffic Engineer or something? I presume you work for Essex County Council then? That's the jobbie, although I get thrown odd stuff as well, like designing weird arty type gates, house plans, hard landscaping, questionaires for people using Tower Hill that don't speak english, drainage design, walking underneath Rotherhithe Tunnel (theres a large pipe running under the road all the way through) and anything else that breaks any possible monotony.
I work for an east London borough, which is okay, apart from the daily commute which is starting to get a bit wearing after the 10 years since moving to Braintree. Next round of jobs that come up in Essex CC I think I'll move and just have an easy trip to Chelmsford.

i am a retail business analyst for a jewellery company. they do the stuff for Topshop, Miss Selfridge, BHS, Wallis, Topman etc etc.
it ranges from being a giggle being surrounded by jewellery to being extremely pressured with very long hours as the stuff i do goes to the board of directors on a regular basis. basically i'm a management accountant with a fancy job title.
i wish i was a hairdresser :( but until i've sold my house i can't afford to leave my current job. i'm sick of being under so much pressure all the time. but at least i'm in the warm and have a brew on the go from 8.30 til 7
it's ok really, well most of the time anyway.
i didnt realise Dogbot used to work across the car park from me until recently hahahah sorry mate!

you know id love to get into pcs, id really feel at home.. fixing pcs, selling parts, phone calls, and mobile callouts would really float my boat.. but without a single qualification in it (nevermind the fact that ive been bought up with pcs and learnt how to use them since i was 6) its hard to get into the industry.. people just dont want to know..
So if anyone gets any vancancies for the kinda job im looking for let me know!:grin1
