Ok, here we go

Got home from work early, roads were dry, temperature well above freezing so I thought I'd get the bike out and go for a ride for an hour.

Got it out, started it up, let it warm up, pulled away, got the traffic lights at the end of my road, (about 150yds away) stopped at the red light, put my left foot down, and OH SH1T, I CAN'T HOLD IT, ITS GONNA GO OVER!, the best I could do was to hang onto it and let it down gently

Damage is minimal, broken clutch lever and scratches on the rubbing strip on the fairing. So I got away very lightly :!:

Another lesson learned, time to move on.

   Richard

Shiii sorry to hear that mate its ashame when summin like that happens,n definately to a newbie biker!
MUST admit i was on my sisters sisters piaggio X9 it was brand new with about 11miles on the clock n i pulled up at the lights on a slight hill,i had forgot how heavy the big bus was n when i put my foot down i nearly lost it,n i just remember some driver looking at me as if to say u were lucky.
(The X9 ways 160Kg which is the same as an R1 or R6 cant quite remember, but it is different as the engine is at the back n not between ya legs so makes it harder to balance)

OH! not forgetting my sister. That Piaggio was her first bike (well it was more of a giant scooter at a weight of 160KG) my sis is only small prob about 5,5. n only got that big thing cos the man in the shop was looking at a good sale to make himself some commision,n my bro said its nice as it had so many features. when i first see it i ****ed myself laughing n said ya having a F**KING laurgh aint ya,look at the size of it!

N then she turns round and says its not that big. ......But when she went to riossi to pick it up she asked the man to ride it up to the road n he said u'll be OK.so she got on rode up to the road at the top of the little hill theres some lights so she stoped went to put her foot down and ended up just dropping the thing cos it was to heavy for her to hold up!
he he bet she felt stupid!!!

she traided that in after her 11 miles in one day ride and my 5 month 3230miles riding for a little one that i singled out for her,its a little piaggio zip 125cc 4stroke quite nippy but not my thing!

How did you manage to drop it? stopped at traffic lights, put your foot down and then it fell over? :? Did you lean it too far when you stopped?

Bummer! :x

Well the damage is all mended, the paintwork touched up, and the clutch lever replaced. I've been off work today, so I got back in the saddle and had another go :!: :!: :!:

Opened it up, just a little bit more today, (still only touched 6/7,000rpm, and I dont suppose I was over half throttle) on a nice new stretch of dual carriageway, and boy oh boy does this thing fly :!:

:D :D :D Richard :D :D :D

I know, I know

I'm new to all this don't forget, apart from a year or so on a moped 25 years ago, my total experience is a 4 day DAS course (2 days on 125, 2 on ER5) and about 100 miles I've clocked up on this CBR1000 I've bought, most of it in the wet :!:

It does say riding CBR1000F GENTLY in my signature

Taking it easy, one step at a time, don't run before I can walk and all that.

Thats OK. I was just laughing at the fright you will get when you wind it up to 12K if you think "boy oh boy does this thing fly" at only 6k!

Just do it on a nice dry long straight!! just the once!

dam man i have stuggled to hold up a dr 250 from an awkward position mainly cause of the height of it! but a 1000 cc must be heavy as [EB]

Tark,
It red lines at 10,500rpm.

Richard

Ah Well that makes a difference then. I guess your power will come in earlier.

My 600 red lines at about 13000 as standard and with high lift cams and blue printed etc etc just keeps revving!!

Hello there just a note to say dont feel too silly about dropping your bike . Here is a (short) story to cheer you up .
Long long ago when I was 17 I had an rd250 (f) it was my pride and joy . Very clean and well turned out . Anyhow in Grays at the bottom of the hill there used to be a shell garage (now long gone) .
It had attended pump service and a girl that I fancied worked in there so , I would go in and fill up just so I could see her and have a chat .
One sunny saturday lunchtime I turned up did the usual and then said my goodbyes and went to ride off .
As I kicked up the sidestand I managed to lean too far the wrong way , youve guessed it I dropped it - but worse was to come - I was a bit of a late developer and at 17 I resembled a short bamboo cane :D .
I couldn't pick up the bike , DOH, then the girl came out and picked it up for me :(
I never went back again .
So next time you think about dropping your bike think about me and smile instead .

Billyam998,

I don't think you could have dropped it in worse circumstances, and then to add inslt to injury, you couldn't pick it up again, , you have probably been psychologically scarred for life :!:

Thanks for sharing your embarassing moment.

Hey i'm a bit late but better late than never right
Hope your pride is heeling Richy, as for my turn, well mine was a few weeks back, I was at work with my dad at the car drome in rainham (he's an instructor for Matchless Rider Training so i get to go and play on the bikes when they arent to busy (like winter! lol) and i usually get to play on the ER500's but for the first time my Dear Old Dad decided to let me play on his company bike - VFR800 which i thought was excellant till, err i tried a U-turn, didnt quite make it and couldnt hold it up, layed it down very gently and broke the one mirror he had left, then i also couldnt pick it up, so i hit the cut off switch and had to wait for one of the other instructors to notice me and come help me pick it up. But of course i didnt learn my lesson from that, hell that'd be too easy, so i carried on playin on the VFR, didnt risk a wheelie, it was just too heavy for that, but i did ok with the riding and corners and such, then when i decided to stop for lunch i pulled over to the offices to park up and forgot how heavy it was, lifted my left foot to put the stand down and the bike went to the right, now my left foot is in the air, the bike is going down and like **** am i gonna be able to stop it, so i try and try and it just goes down regardless, pulling a muscle in my shoulder, course my brain hasnt told me to move my right foot yet so the bike goes down on my foot, taking me down with it, so now my leg is under the bike and im in a bit of pain, and errrm it gets worse, how....... i have to call my brother over to lift the bike off my leg, how is this worse? he's 11 years old!! and he lifted it enough for me to scramble to my feet and stand the bike up so he could put the stand down! :( i then realise that i have broken the brake lever, lets say that when my Dad got back from his road ride with his students he was not very pleased as he had to ride it to his home that night and then to dartford and then into london the next morning! oh and it was a busy day so not only did his students see the state of the bike afterwards, but the learners in the cars saw me drop the bike. i was in so much pain the next day, my back, neck, shoulder and leg! ouch  :( the pic of me on the vfr in the eb gallery was taken after i dropped it 1st time but B4 i dropped it 2nd time!
So i learned a lesson from that ....... I DO NOT WANT ANY BIKE BIGGER THAN 600CC TOPS!!! May-be I'll play it safe and get a 250  although dads old CBR6 is sitting in his garage doing nothing........ hmmmmmm :P
