looking for a graphics card upgrade

well since im getting into gaming on my computer it seems I need to upgrade my graphics card , im playing BF2142 and COD4 at the moment but its only running on minimum settings being held back by the said card it a Nvdia 7300gs PCIe card which although seems to be a good card its not for gaming ive included a screen shot of what else the computer is made up off any recommendations and were to go for it would be great looking for something around £200http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g94/bigbikefan/screenshot.jpg

what sort of budget are you looking at Dave?

ATI 3870 cards are the ones to get at the moment, cheaper than Nvidia 8800's and with pretty much the same sort of capability (certainly good for gaming with any of the new stuff like Crysis and COD4).

Failing that anything newer than the X1950 range.

I am still using an X1650 and it will play Crysis on its medium settings well enough to enjoy it, any of the other current games it eats alive :)

i am still on a 2.8ghz dual core and havent upgraded yet, but i am running 3.0gb of RAM with that X1650 card, as i say on medium settings its fine :)

you cant go far wrong with one of these really, okay its running 256mb instead of 512 but its more than capable ;)

So I assume you are running XP? would you not get more performance if you ran VISTA? I have just had a quick nose around and you can overclock your card. I googled Nvidia 7300gs speed, have a look round.

Overclocking is all well and good Rich, but some of these newer games will fry a GPU on a VGA card if its been overclocked, without any problems whatsoever ;)

The main thing that the new games are using is the actuall processors and not the speed of the processor, most of the newer cards which are DX10 compatible use totally different shaders now.

For what its worth Vista wont actually make any more use of the hardware than XP already does, if anything Vista requires more resources to run it properly, thats not to say it isnt a sparkly OS with plenty of bells and whistles, but most of the hardcore gamers that i used to catch up with online in some of the gaming tournaments have stuck with XP for gaming, a case of better the devil you know and in the main graphics drivers that never let them down, although DX10 will be the way forward ;)

Trust me, Crysis makes COD4 look pants in terms of graphics with DX10 ;)

CPU wise i would just upgrade the current CPU to around 2.2ghz (Allendale instead of Conroe) and maybe look to go for a 450watt PSU and a higher spec PCIe graphics card, it doesnt have to be the ATI 3780 series as i mentioned because i reckon you could get everything you need for around £200 if you shop around and end up with a pretty capable gaming rig ;)

Dude...your processor seems fine! considering you have a vistapc...i take it you have a pci-E 16x port!? what i would do if i were you IS...completely max out your ram, then buy at 'LEAST' modern 256 PCI E graphics card....ost of them can use your ram at certan levels to increase em.....like if you have more tha 2 gb of ram..and you have a decent 256card...it can use on board mem and become 512!which p.c do you have? cause you will need to keep an eye on your PSU and the power reqirements for the graphics card!

the PSU is a atx300 300w max but dont now of it has any power plugs for the extra graphic card lead , think thats right :grin2

300watt for a PSU on most modern graphics cards is going to be working flat out, the minimum standard these days for anything to do with gaming tends to be 400watt, especially for newer PCIe cards ;)

I upgraded my card not that long ago from a Radeon X550 256 to a 8500GT 512MB and so far 'Touch Wood' its run everything fine that ive thrown at it... my primary harddrive is full up with all the latest games..

im a wargame fanatic, Call Of Duty 1/UO 2 & i just downloaded the SP to test it out

mine plays BF2, BF2142 (ask mistere i played with him before im pretty sure) and the recent newish MEDAL OF HONOUR Airborne

well ive set my self a plan , after christmas Im going to replace the PSU and the graphics card , then later the mother board and chip set and then extra Ram , Im going to be looking for a 600w minimum PSU and the most powerfull graphis card card I can get for around £200 or less any recommendations gratefully received
