I need some advice probably best from someone who is up to scratch on the common law regarding three wheeled 'cars' (Reliants).

Basically its come to my attention that im going to need at one point or another, a car. *GASP*

However, because i can neither be bothered to, or be willing to shell out for a car license i am wondering whether the law is still the same regarding myself driving my dads robin rialto.. obviously im not talking a get insurance and go lol as they are cars in the physical sense... but do they still count as trikes and thus can be 'driven' on a full motorcycle license..

IF the answers yes, will i need to get a quote from a car insurance company or will a bike one do it??:grin2

Stop sniggering at the back!!!:grin2

Just another random idea that i wanna do :D

Furthermore, its lightweight (http://www.everything2.com/index.pl?node=lightweight) body allows it to sneak (http://www.everything2.com/index.pl?node=sneak) under the weight restrictions (http://www.everything2.com/index.pl?node=restriction) for being classed as a car in the UK, and so is technically (http://www.everything2.com/index.pl?node=technically) a motorbike (http://www.everything2.com/index.pl?node=motorbike). This means that Robin drivers needn't have a full driving license (as is immediately apparent if you're ever stuck behind one in traffic (http://www.everything2.com/index.pl?node=traffic)). Another obvious bonus of the fibreglass shell is the rust (http://www.everything2.com/index.pl?node=rust), or lack of. The frame itself is steel though, so it's not immune (http://www.everything2.com/index.pl?node=immune).

Seems that sums it up.. ive also discovered the 'Reliant Kitten' a four wheeled version of the same car, but because its under the weight restriction again... it counts as a bike and thus can be driven on a motorcycle license.

Thanks anyway..:grin2

Yes, if it has a kerbside weight of under 410Kg then it can be ridden on a full motorcycle licence. Ensure you check the logbook that will tell you its tax class and reveal all.:reading

But please remember...........

You cant tow a bloody bike trailer and you dont have to wear a crash hat whilst driving one Tooey! :shooter

I think I've only ever seen one kitten. The girl owner used to hide it around the corner when she came to college with us. I've had a couple of mates with Reliant Robins. They both turned them over frequently whilst doing U turns. Just roll them back up and carry on they said.

I believe there are other cars in this bracket now, but less common than the Robin, eg Axiam http://www.aixam-cars.co.uk/moreinfo.htm

......and its under 33bhp I think, from my calcs it says 12.9kw, 25kw is 33bhp, so its about 17bhp by that reckoning!!....it ought to fly!

Tooeymaster,

Born in the 80's and stuck in the 60's, a living tale of devolution :D

It amazes me that you bother with a PC actually Tooey when i would have thought that the complexities of an Abacus would more suit your penchant for antiques :D

I really do hope your bird has the same sort of outlook on stuff as you, sticking her in a Reliant ala Derek Trotter style could possibly scar her for life :D

I've driven a Robin and they are quite entertaining. They make good trikes as well which is where a lot of them disappeared to in the 80s.

I am guessing that would put it over the weight allowance to class it as a m/c?

http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q173/sP3nc3r1_photos/trotter.jpgMy mate was driving us round a very narrow lane in Kent and I suggested hitting the hooter on a particularly blind bend as a warning to oncoming traffic.

He hit it with the flat of his hand, there was a muted toot and the button, a spring and numerous plastic washers exploded all over us.

After that he believed it was a once only warning device, only to be used in the direst emergency.

Please hate it a bit more :DI actually admire you for not going with the flow and buying the same bikes as everyone else, I can see where that comes from, I'm a bit like that myself. I know I've occasionally taken the mick, but I'm just helping you to build character, I believe everyone should be mocked when young, it's good for them. Never did me any harm, apart from the rash and the nervous tick of course, but I'm sure lots of people have them.

Give yourself a few years and all the experiences with broken bikes and having to fix them yourself (or break them trying) will stand you in good stead if you don't lose heart in the mean time. When something breaks in the future you will think of some way to fix it from previous experience rather than waiting for a breakdown truck on a rainy day or paying a huge amount of money for a shop to make it worse. It'll make you more self reliant (like the Robin eh).:grin2

Really?? wow.. is that because they wont leave you alone or something..?

And thanks bayonet.. see the first major thing to go wrong with the gt has been the oil cooler, batterys died once, but a bump and the thing went all the way home on that... strange bike lol!

theres now switches in the topbox to make sure the peripherals arent draining the battery whilst the engine is off...giving the alternator at least the chance of charging the battery:D

A friends offered to install a second battery for the peripherals but im not sure how to charge it on the move, i dont want to split the alternator off to another battery as currently i havent interfered with the bikes primary electrics what so ever and id like to keep it that way!:grin2:D

no theres a point in what im saying if you say you love em.. to the extent you go purchase one, i wont like it much as its not my own unique bike, hence the reason why i wont get a gixxer.. pointless.. id spend more time trying to work out whats different between mine and the 20 or so others lined up next to it at rideouts...:grin2

When you have had a Gixer 1000 or 750, you will then know why they are so popular, I have had nigh on a hundred bikes and the Gixer is my favourite

Put it this way mate.. have you ever heard of Axiam before??

I mean before kasandrich mentioned em..

No... then i wouldnt touch it..

Whereas every tom **** and harry knows what a robin reliant is and therefore would probably know where to get bits for or at least how to fix it if it went wrong..

Reminds me of when i was looking at the 'Yava' (Jawa) sidecar outfit, the advice i was given then, no matter how cold, wet, or how many bundles of cargo i might have to take on a trip i wouldnt get an axiam without at least SOMEONE knowing where to get the car spares/fixed :grin2

Stick with the ped.. or get a reliant..

:D

Seeing as your buying it for the winter, i wouldn't recommend an aixam as they are known for not starting well in the cold, which isn't a great start. Also as for tooeys point, the parts are expensive! Plus they're noisey and very slow.
